From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4--Because of their brief texts and beautiful color photographs on every other page, these small-sized introductions to four different birds will attract browsers and casual readers. Not intended to be inclusive, they provide an overview and introduction to the life-cycles and habitats of their featured subjects. The texts are pared down, with no wasted words--except for the Latin names, which are of questionable value to this age group. Important concepts are printed in bold, followed by a definition, and then repeated in a glossary, with pronunciation guides, and the index. Although brief, Pelican does include a funny, well-known verse: "A wonderful bird is the Pelican,/ His bill will hold more than his belican". Each book includes a page with information about the effects of pollution upon the birds' habitats. Four books that will be helpful for young readers' assignments.
