Book Description

December 20, 2004
Penitentiary Pacific renders the story of two young men, who, due to a quest for vengeance on the part of drug chief Alverez Zsapata, Jr., become inmates at a subaqueous, subterranean prison where their strength and courage are repeatedly tested. Upon learning of his wife's infidelity, Zsapata employs two police officers in an operation to frame Rolando Reynolds, a college student who cannot seem to stay away from relationships with already attached women. Rolando's friend Gabriel Juarez, who happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, becomes entwined in Zsapata's web when he is with Rolando on the night of the arrest. They end up with life sentences at Penitentiary Pacific, and Rolando's mother, who is the tri-state district attorney, works diligently at securing the boys' freedom. Emphasizing the idea that one's actions may often carry formidable consequences, Penitentiary Pacific couples elements of adventure, suspense, and romance, with a futuristic conception of the new millennium.

No editing and lots of typos which really distract. Story has promise but would be improved with imput from an actual editor.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too dark and harsh, November 13, 2005
This review is from: Penitentiary Pacific (Paperback)
There are very few books written that I don't enjoy but unfortunately, Pacific Penitentiary was one that I did not enjoy at all.

In the first pages, the author, J. Buchanan, jumped from one set of characters to another and yet a third. This was extremely hard to follow and a reader couldn't be sure which would be the main characters. If this is not set up in the first four or five pages, it makes reading the book very hard. The first set of characters, as it turns out, has the main character of the story but in jumping right away to two other sets of characters had me confused for a bit.

Another drawback to this book is the reader needs to be able to think in a futuristic mind set as it is set in the year 2013. Reading Science Fiction such as Star Wars is one thing but this book was dark, bleak and showed life in a very harsh view. It contains violent and unhappy material and, as I said, with three sets of characters, made it very hard to follow the story line.

The premise of the book - what can happen when you are in the wrong place at the wrong time - is a good one. In this case it lead to being incarcerated. And, of course, there is always the person who fights to help the wrongly accused. It is the mother of one of the boys.

Good verses evil, right verses wrong and innocent verses guilty are the basis for this book but it was too tragic for me. This is not a book I would recommend for a "curl up by the fire" read. There are more books out there that have happier story lines that I would rather spend my time reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Writing, January 25, 2006
By
This review is from: Penitentiary Pacific (Paperback)
I read a lot of books and I have never come across one like this. I have to admit that I was happily blown away. The writing is so vivid and sharp that it reads like a Tarrantino movie. The author is very impressive.
