The Cascade 300 inline filter is a good cheap filter for a five or 10 gallon tank that requires a slow to medium current (I use it in 5gal betta tanks) but I would not recommend it in anything bigger as any bio-load over 'light' would overwhelm it.

It has a bio-sponge section and a "Disposable Carbon filter Cartridge" that they want you to buy in packs. I pried open the cartridge it came with to find low grade carbon pellets so I replaced them with Marineland Black Diamond Premium and it works even better now.

I have a red eared slider turtle and his home is a 55 gallon tank. He makes quite a mess in his home and I have gone through at least 4-5 different filters in the 2+ years that I have had him. I've tried the external filters that sound like a constant waterfall only to have it short out. So then I decided to look at submersible filters and went through about 2 of those before I found this. At first I was frustrated because the water started to turn green and it was as though it wasn't working. Miraculously one morning I woke up and the water was crystal clear and has been since then. It's quiet and Homer LOVES to float in front of the water being pushed out. He puts his little head in his shell and let's the water just shoot over top of his shell.

To sum it up - it's powerful, quiet and Homer loves the water coming out of the filter. I would absolutely recommend this!!!!!!

I use two Cascade 600 filters in my 55 gallon aquatic Xenopus (African Clawed Frog) tank. As they like to hang at the surface of the water, mate, and eat without getting blown around by a high current, they are happy with the fact that the flow rate is low because I can turn the outlet away from the center of the tank and into the back tank wall. Because they like to excrete that which they consume in large amounts, I am happy that their tank is kept clean between water changes. For larger amphibian tanks, these filters are quite effective AND low in price. More effective in a larger tank than Duetto internal filters. I have Duetto filters in smaller 10-20 gallon tanks for amphibians and find that the Cascade filters are better for larger tanks. You can use the nozzle shown on the box picture or you can use a bar that is included with the filter. They are big, bulky filters that take up space in the tank, but this is the downside of filtration that has low currents. I can not testify as to longevity of the item, but I have been willing to risk the purchase as for the time being we are all very happy. Buy if you want good filtration with a low flow rate at a good price.

I bought two of these for my 75 gallon tank and put one on each side. These are larger than you think but it wont be an issue because you can lay them down or stand them up in your tank. I had a really really really dirty smelly tank and two of these gave me clear water in about 10 hours..

Here are the good things about this filter

Comes with a filter and carbon to start you off. Comes with a sprat attachment than you can direct the output flow direction. It also has a spray bar attachment. Also comes with an air tube with muffler. So it filters with foam and carbon, directs the flow of the water with either a directional attachment or spray bar. The water output level can be turned from low to high and the high is pretty powerful. You kinda get a 3 in one. filters the water particles and sets the correct levels with carbon, air tube adds air to water and the pump keeps your water moving. I would get two and put one at each end of the tank if you have the money. Also you can just pour new carbon in the tray as opposed to having to buy cloth or cotton bags. filter is easy to pull out take apart and simply rinse off.

and some weak cons
It's larger than you think, the ihgh output flow can be a tiny bit noisy if you have it close to the top of the water line. You must use a suction cup to hold the spray bar or it will sag...but thats what its there for so not really a true con.

So far so good it got my really dirty tank that had been sitting for a a month clean in less than half a day and super clean later on. Five juicy mf stars

I was just about to click order on a filter over double the price of this one but I realized it wasn't eligible for my Prime shipping. I'm glad I kept looking! This filter is extremely cheap compared to its equal counterparts and works very well.

I really like that is meant to be submerged so if the power goes out it doesn't have to be primed again for the motor to not burn up. And the fountain attachment is loved by the fish and the turtle both. At night I find Chacha, the turtle, camped out directly under the flowing water. I clean it out once a week (turtles are gross) and it keeps the 50 gallon pond nice and clear.

Not surprisingly, the carbon that comes with the filter isn't the best of the best so after emptying out the plastic carbon box and filling it with higher grade carbon the filter is one of the better ones I've owned. (Marineland PA0392 Diamond Blend Activated Carbon/Ammonia Neutralizing Crystals, 50-Ounce, 1417-Gram, to be exact.) They sell replacement carbon boxes, but I'll just be reusing the one that came with it.

I'm very happy with this filter. The price can't be beat, even with deciding to upgrade the carbon.
