Seven or so years ago, I bought a combo set up (Long Beach 6' rod rated at 15-30 LB line) and a made in USA Penn 209. Took it on an offshore trip and hooked into a 20 kilo (44 pound) yellow fin tuna. I had the reel strung with 250 meters of 50lb braid and at the end of the swivel was a 30lb mono leader. The fish was just about as much as the 209 could handle. it took me 40 minutes to put the fish in the boat. I didn't want to lock down the drag too tight for fear of breaking the gears and/or the mono leader but I almost got spooled in the process. Bottom line, the Penn 209 is a good enough reel but I don't recommend it for tuna or any fish over 20lbs for that matter. Also, I've compared my reel to the newer 209 made in China. The China product is inferior in quality.
