5.0 out of 5 stars Very user friendly reel, April 26, 2004

I like to point out, I have never casted with a conventional reel before. All my fishing was done using spinning reels. This was my first conventional reel. Up to date I have not gotten any backlashes. On my 3rd fishing trip, I easily casted about 300 feet, and I am just a beginner.

The drags on these reels work great. You can fine tune it.

This reel is a true long distance fishing reel. It's solid and durable, you can even dip it in saltwater.

I'm not sure I would call this a "beginners" casting reel. It still requires some skill with the thumb. I had quite a few fluff ups at first, but this proved to be the cheapo line I was using (I would recommend braid or a mono with very low memory). DON'T tighten the side play on the reel, leave it loose, some reels use this as a way to control casting and over spooling, not this reel. The only casting control you have is the mag slider on the left side of the reel and your thumb. I've landed a number of hard fighting bone fish with this reel, in the 3-5lb range, the drag works well and reel had no problems cranking them in. I bought this reel to fish in the surf primarily and to use when the tuna bite is on. The only problem I fore see is that the reel doesn't hold a lot of line, I can fling a 4oz weight about 150 yards with this reel, but that only leaves me 125 yards to fight the fish with, not really a problem with a 30 lb halibut...big problems with a 80lb shark or bat ray or if your on a boat and hook into a log of a tuna. Over all I give this reel 4 stars, it casts well (with practice beginners), the drag works well, it cranks fish in. you can target a wide range of fish species and it doesn't seem to require lots of work to maintain it. The finish could be better, the instruction manual is only one page.

Excellent reel, for those who practice long casting, or surf casting. Excellent materials, good performance, great drag ratio.
If you are looking for a serious casting reel, this is it.
