This review is from: Penn Powerstick Surf Spinning Rod (Sports)
I've had this rod since Christmas last year (2008) and I put a Penn 6500 SS loaded with 20# clear Andes monofilament on it. I have put this rod through much surf and saltwater abuse along the Florida panhandle from Mexico Beach to Grayton Beach with pompano and red fish being my primary target. I use anywhere from 1 oz. to 4 oz. pyramid sinkers depending on the surf and this rod performs beautifully. It is light enough to use for an entire day without causing fatigue and strong enough to land a 30# plus red fish and countless pomps. I feel comfortable in saying that this rod could stand up to my dream of landing a cobia from the beach. I always wash it down after my excursions and my only complaints are: the handle has begun to peel a bit and the handle broke free from the rod causing my reel to spin. Miraculously this problem corrected itself and I have continued to catch fish on it, I may purchase another Penn Power Stick since I like the casting distance the 12' length gives me or give the 10' Lamiglas a shot since they are around the same price.

What a surprise. My first time fishing with the rod casting a 3oz sinker was not a problem. However on day two fishing , I changed the sinker to a 4oz and you guessed it -snap. The rod snapped at the start of the cast right where they connect. I was so disappointed. I would not recommend this rod. The rod looks good , but snapping on a cast- is not forgiven. After 20 years of surf fishing this has never happened to me. I have old Penn reels which have been fine, but the first time I have purchased a rod. Never again from Penn!

I use a lot of Penn equipment...as of now..this is my favorite rod..I got it to use with a Penn 4500 spinning reel..matched up great..light weight..good action...similar to the Tica rod..but alot less expensive...If I hadn't just bought 2 other Penn Powerstick rods..I'd buy another one... |
