Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I hope you enjoy this book,  It took  me many years to write, mostly because I kept re-writing it, over and over again.  The characters lived in my head for many years, it was nice to finally give them a forever home in Pennies from Hell.

About the Author

D.L.Williams has been reading fiction novels for decades, and he is now happily writing them. He retired early and moved to the warmth of Naples Florida.  The author is also working on a children's picture book with the artist Timothy Campbell, The Almost True Adventures of Whyboy.  Tim Campbell created the cover for Pennies from hell.

Pennies from Hell is D.L.Williams first novel.

More About the Author

Born in February of 1958, I am apparently a late starter. I have had a career in computer technology since 1980 and for the last 24 years I have worked for a privately owned grocery wholesaler based in New England.

When I couldn't stand having that much fun anymore, I retired early in the hopes that I could make a go of a writing career. My first children's book will be out at the end of October, The Almost True Adventures of Whyboy.

Definitely a fun read -- great imagination in fantasy romp trying to win the lottery, what to do with unexpected riches, and the kind of friendships we all appreciate -- peopled with characters that could have come from 'The Birdcage' or 'To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar' (both are movies I loved). I wouldn't suggest it to my grandmother nor hand it to any Y/A readers -- it's an adult subject. But it is well done as a story line. Would make a great 'Birdcage' style movie.

I loved the characters from the very first page. The author has a distinct voice, with sharp, crisp characters who were each vibrant individuals. His humor comes through in every chapter. If anything it could be trimmed a bit. There so much going on that it was sometimes overwhelming, but always a great read.

All the characters were well developed. The story line was interesting. The ending begs a sequel. The chapter names were humorous.

Doug Williams' cast of characters, a band of bumbling misfits are most endearing. It is difficult to walk away from their antics as each episode sets the stage for another chapter of tomfoolery. Though they are in search of the pot of gold and have less than honorable means to achieve their dreams, you cannot help but cheer them on as one roadblock after another stumbles in front of them. This eclectic ensemble of souls makes you laugh out loud, find justice in their frolics, and offers the goodness that each possessed in his or her own unique way. I am so pleased I was introduced to this wonderful debut novel. I look forward to more work by Mr. Williams.

A perfect title with perfectly hilarious characters. Read the first couple of chapters, and the dialogue and visual images will keep you reading. A great book always leaves me thinking about its characters on my drive to work, and I had many chuckles, remembering the former night's reading. There is plenty of physical comedy in this book, with characters who are unbelievably believable! I loved the overt and subtle humor. It's definitely a feel good book because you've got to feel good that you are not in the predicaments these folks get themselves into!
