This review is from: Pennsylvania Deitsh Dictionary: Deitsh to English, English to Deitsh (Paperback)
I have been trying to find a dictionary with the German/Russian dialect and finally found one with the help of Erik Wesner through Amazon.com. Much to my surprise the Pennsylvania Dutch have the same dialect. The Germans from Russian settled in North Dakota in the 1800's with a mix of German and Russian language. I learned the language growing up just by listening to my parents and grandparents talking. There were words I didn't know how to say or what they meant until I found this dictionary. We are thrilled that we finally found it. My sister and I are trying to carry on the language and this dictionary has been a tremendous help. My grandson who is 11 years old is very interested in learning this language. The dictionary affords a better opportunity to help him. I bought several to give as gifts to my other siblings and for my grandson. "Dakota Kraut" by Ron Vossler has been another book about our heritage here in North Dakota. It is well written and makes me feel like I was back in my childhood. Thanks to Erik and Ron for cataloging my heritage. It helped me to know who I am and why I do things the way I do and speak the language I heard growing up. I appreciate all the effort put into these two books.Kathy Landgren |
