Originally written in 1978, this is a 2003 reprint which adds color photos. The paper is heavy and glossy (enameled), and this book covers the German Palatine history, plus the emigration/immigration history, plus the PA history, all of which explains why these chests have the form that they do and the decoration that they have. Regarded by most people into this genre as the definitive work on this subject. I would agree. It is very thorough. I do wish, though, that given the 30 year printing/reprinting span, that the publishers could have found another scholar to update and add to Fabian's work, and/or put out a call for the hundreds, if not, thousands of chests that have never seen a museum or an auction (like mine), which is from where nearly all of the included pictures are sourced. Nonetheless, it's a great book, and well worth the money.

The P-G Decorated Chest book is so delightful to read and savor the incredible art. It's truly a lost art and one that should be revived and brought back to life.
Everything is so ordinary now. There is little in the way of this type of craft. The paintings are amazing. And, as an aspiring folk artist, this book gave me so much insight to this genre.
The book is gorgeous and so is the art!

One of the most outstanding reference books on PA-German blanket chests. A must for your library. Quality pictures and information.
