Gr. 3-6. The covers of these entries in the Land of Liberty series are very inviting; inside, the books are more workmanlike. After brief introductions, both books offer a description of the land, climate, and wildlife; a state history; and discussions of government, the economy, and the people and culture. Beginning the books with a geography-geology lesson is not much of a grabber. New Mexico doesn't really pick up until the discussion of the three groups that primarily make up the state's population. Pennsylvania has a more appealing text; the history chapters are lively. Boxes and sidebars add minimal information about such subjects as the controversial UFO crash near Roswell, New Mexico. A literal bright note is the photography: the many pictures are crisp and colorful, if somewhat staid in selection. Internet sources, a time line, a glossary, and a representative recipe round out each book. Ilene Cooper
