Great book to take along!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pennsylvania State Parks: A Complete Outdoor Recreation Guide for Campers, Boaters, Anglers, Hikers and Outdoor Lovers (State Park Guidebooks) (Paperback)
Great book to carry along on your weekend camping trip! Directions for getting there, things to do, what's nearby, and which campsite is the best for whatever you like to do. Phone numbers for advance reservations, and (did I mention!) campsite numbers so you know what to ask for! We carry it along and add our own campsite comments for return trips. Any one who camps the state parks of Pennsylvania will not be disappointed with this book!

This review is from: Pennsylvania State Parks: A Complete Outdoor Recreation Guide for Campers, Boaters, Anglers, Hikers and Outdoor Lovers (State Park Guidebooks) (Paperback)
This book is a great resource for camping and day hiking in the PA state park system. This book simply lists useful information about the park to make your visit run all the more smoothly. Each chapter on each park starts out with a little information on the park's history and why the park was designated as state land. It also includes contact information for the parks, easy to follow directions to the park, an explanation of the camping facilities and a list of what activities are available (hunting, hiking, biking, rafting, canoeing, scenic plane excursions, winter use, etc.). In the case of hiking, this information is quite detailed so you can make a judgment about whether or not you'd like to hike there or not. They don't go so far as to explain the hikes fully as you can just pick up more info when you get there. In a few cases, maps are provided as well as a few photos of the park's attractions. Overall, I would say the most useful detail included in this book is the insider insight into which campground sites are preferable. This has paid off for us huge in the past.Really, I think you could do without this book as much of the information can be found online, but we have found that this is just a handy little book to have on hand when out and about exploring PA's state park system.

The handbook was great in 1996. However, Pennsylvania State Parks have improved greatly over the past few years and now the information is grossly outdated.
