Book Description

Amateur sleuth Cleopatra Jones of rural Hogan’s Glen, Maryland faces an unwanted hazard when she skulls her golf ball across the number six green and it lands in the inseam of a very dead banker. Though the victim is a longtime friend of Cleo’s, his ongoing dispute with Cleo’s best friend and golfing partner, Jonette, is public knowledge. When the police key in on Jonette as the prime suspect, Cleo sets out to find the real killer.

Amidst the fun of wacky meals, dueling daughters, Mama’s heart problem, lovesick Saint Bernards, a sexy golf pro, a repentant ex-husband and a host of murder suspects, Cleo does what she does best. With her trusty spreadsheets and logical accountant’s brain, she organizes the information and ferrets out a crazed killer.

Set against the lush splendor of mid-Atlantic springtime, this fun-packed mystery with a dash of romance will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next.

"reading a Cleopatra Jones mystery is a nice way to spend the afternoon" Romantic Times

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set in Hogan's Glen, Md., this witty cozy from Toussaint (No Second Chance) introduces Cleopatra Jones, accountant, avid golfer and single mother of two. Still reeling from her divorce from her cheating ex-husband, Charlie, Cleo is stunned to discover Charlie's best friend from childhood, Donny Davis (aka Dudley Doright), lying on the golf course, a bullet hole between his eyes. When the police suspect Cleo's own childhood friend, Jonette Moore, of the crime, Cleo goes into action to flush out the real murderer. A handsome golf pro's offer of romance gives Cleo a boost as she deals with her mother, her children and the Saint Bernard dumped on her by her ex-husband. While filled with clichéd prose and stereotypical characters, the story takes some unexpected and dangerous turns as it builds to a satisfying conclusion. (June)

From the Author

In For a Penny is followed by On the Nickel and Dime If I Know. All of the books in the series have money in the title to go along with my sleuth's career as a small town accountant.

Many people have heard me say this, so it isn't a secret. Ernie Els was the visual inspiration for my golf pro supporting character, though the difference between Ernie and my fictional Rafe stops right there.

The inspiration for this book came from my Ladies Nine Hole Golf League in Walkersville, Maryland. I took up golf at the urging of my husband who had this idyllic vision of us golfing together in our declining years. But I wasn't a good golfer, not by any stretch of the imagination. I learned to crush the ball and it went forever and a day - into the woods. It was on one such stomp around the woods that I thought "this would be a great place to find a murder victim." After that, I looked at golf in a whole new light.

Cleo's sidekick Jonette is an amalgam of my lifelong best friends in her devotion and unwavering friendship to Cleo. In Jonette's mind, Cleo can do anything. I wish everyone would have such a wonderful friend as Jonette.

I hope you enjoy this series and that you might also sample my other mysteries and romantic suspense stories. Nothing like a little sweet southern justice to round out your day!

4.0 out of 5 stars A perfect Cozy September 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
As if coping with her divorce, two daughters and living with her mother wasn't enough, Cleo Jones had enough on her plate before coming across a dead body on the golf course.

A perfect cozy mystery, with a touch of romance. Since the author also writes romantic suspense, she handles that aspect of the plot well. Quirky characters, a motivated protagonist all make this book an entertaining read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun mystery with interesting characters August 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is such a fun, easy read. I love Maggie Toussaint's sense of humor, her ear for dialogue, and her flowing writing style. Cleo is an endearing protagonist whose loyalty to her family and friends is admirable, but it gets her into a lot of trouble. Even though I don't usually gravitate toward this genre (this book was recommended by a friend), I enjoyed the plot, the characters (especially Cleo's mom), and the small town atmosphere that Maggie has created. Can't wait to read "On the Nickel," the next in the series, to see what Cleo gets up to this time!

2.0 out of 5 stars No good reason to read November 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
So you're reading one of those free downloads and you're thinking, "this isn't very engaging, but I may as well finish it. I want to at least find out whodunnit." Don't bother. The characters are shallow, the main character's motivation is forced, the writing is mediocre at best, the love interest is barely even present. And after all that, if you push through to the ending, Toussaint doesn't even finish the book! You're left hanging with nothing. Nothing. The murders are left unsolved, and just as the main character gets her first moment alone with the love interest, the book just ends. Awful. Authors who create artificial cliff-hangers like this should be banished.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Wait For The Next In Series December 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A mystery with a little romance without the schmaltz. I loved this book, which is the first in series for Cleopatra Jones, the main character. She's not starry eyed, but she is a hard-working accountant with teenage children who has divorced her scum-ball husband. The mystery is believable, and if you've ever lived in a small town, you will appreciate the connections of all the characters. I'd characterize this as a cozy, complete with dogs, kids and the ever present mother. Have fun and buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Determined Protagonist August 26, 2012
By Polly
Format:Kindle Edition
Cleopatra Jones is a piece of work. When she has her mind made up, nothing gets in her way. Not even a murderer. This is a delightful addition to Ms. Toussaint's body of work. Her characters are fun, and the plots always keep me guessing. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cozy, endearing mystery January 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Toussaint pens a cozy "who-dunnit" mystery with "In For a Penny." When Cleopatra Jones finds her ex-husband's best friend, Dudley, dead as a doornail, on the golf course, she's 'in for a penny,' as the Hogan's Glen police investigate her friends and family as suspects.

Cleopatra (Cleo) Jones is an accountant in the small town of Hogan Glen. Everybody knows everybody. While playing golf with her best friend, she discovers Dudley's dead body. News travels fast and it seems everyone has a motive to do Dudley in. There's Cleo's best friend, Jonette, Cleo's ex-husband, Charles, Charlie's wife, Denise, Jasper the golf course maintenance guy, Jasper's mother, Cleo's neighbor, Ed, the mayor, and the shady real estate developer guy. The police start an official investigation, but Cleo's determined to find the murderer herself. As the danger gets closer to Cleo, will she find a killer or get killed herself?

"In For A Penny" has an endearing cast of characters. There's Cleo, the beleaguered, yet determined heroine, Mama, Cleo's exasperating mother, Jonette, Cleo's steadfast best, friend, Brit, the bossy cop, Dudley, who was no "doright," Charlie the cheater, and Rafe the golf pro hottie. Toussaint does an excellent job giving Hogan's Glen a life of it's own.

Toussaint builds the mystery slowly, but masterfully, up'ing the emotional involvement with each new angle Cleo investigates. The ending promises to keep the reader on the edge of their seat as Cleo returns to the scene of the murder to catch a killer. "In For A Penny," will have you smiling, fuming, biting your nails, and cheering for Cleo. Toussaint earns two enthusiastic thumbs up from this reader. I highly recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother - couldn't finish it May 21, 2013

I only made it through a few chapters and had to stop. Too painful. The characters were really cariactures and the plot was silly and over the top. As a CPA I was really hoping for an interesting book about a crime solving accountant. Still looking.
