Words can not describe,
By Brad (california) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pennywise (Audio CD)
One listen to Pennywise and you'll realize they aren't like most 90's punkers. Unlike the Offspring and Blink-182, who's pop sound has grown so much into their style that it isn't even punk anymore, Pennywise has always remained true to their original style. This album, their first full length EP, is arguably their best album (the only contender would be Full Circle). Indeed, you can't get much more punk than these guys. But Pennywise is punk with a message. Their lyrics are unbelievably powerful, even life changing. I've heard many stories of people's lives taking a turn for the better after listening to Pennywise. Just pay attention to what Jim is singing in songs like "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "No Reason Why," "Bro Hymn" and "Rules." These guys have a lot of good things to say. And they have a lot of great music to back it up. Fletcher Dragge is one of the best punk guitarists ever. Byron's drumming skills are breathtaking, and Jason's bass playing is fast and furious (their new bass player, Randy, is definately equal to Jason, if not better). If you like real punk rock and positive lyrics, definately check these guys out. Also be sure to listen to their other albums, all of which are great.

pennywise rules,

If you like punk than you like Pennywise. This cd, their best one, established the original sound to which they have remained true through all their more recent releases. With Byron setting the beat on drums the band produces the tightest sound out there. Buy this cd. Buy all their cds. You won't regret it. All you need to do to become a believer is listen to Bro Hymn. Other good bands include NoFX, Lagwagon, Operation Ivy, Millencolin and AFI.

Such a classic!,

The years passed and punk-rock music became more angular, less angry, less crunchy but the classics aren't there to disappear, they're there to remember how a certain style of music should be! Pennywise's first album had been copied so many times but never equaled, this fast, furious and energic CD is the best release that had ever been made by epitaph records (Oh you got some other cool stuff also!)!

I didnt read all of the stuff urza 216 wrote but from reading the first paragraph he clearly just started listening to pennywise. And to say that the lyrics are better on the newer albums than this album is completly stupid. The lyrics jason wrote on the first three cds are amazing, they are words to live by, better that that f**k athority stuff they're writing now. If you want good pennywise, buy this cd and unknown road (their best) and about time.

This was the first real punk album that turned me on to the genre. I've been listening to this album for several years now and i still fully love it. The lyrics are great, the riffs are punky and choppy, and it will definatily make you feel good, so buy it!!!!!!

Pennywise is simply incredible, I fell in love with them the first time I hear Bro Hymn (reminds me a little of "Self Esteem" by the Offspring, a truly fantastic band, they did not sellout, and what the hell is a successful punk band supposed to do, make less money to make a point?).All in all, if you love anything like punk you will love Pennywise, and this whole album is great, I can't wait to buy some of their others.

If you're playing that game where you figure out what 5 CDs you'd have on a desert-island- something by Pennywise has to be on that list- and this just may be the one. Its hard to pick the best Pennywise album- but it isn't hard to note the great PW albums and this is one of them. The music is agressive and clear, the lyrics are solid. Like many of my favorite bands, there's nuggets of wisdom to think about in the songs. Pennywise shares equal space with my Bad Religion and NOFX CDs. |
