Irving demonstrates vocal abilities that match the most professional of actors. In this story, taken from his first big novel, The World According to Garp, Irving effects just the right tone of wistful reminiscence that gives the book its distinctive feel. He doesn't strain to give each character a different voice, yet each one remains unique--even the unicycle-riding bear. While he doesn't race through the text, Irving proceeds at a steady pace, which doesn't for a moment drag. Notice that a side has ended and ordering information are nice editing inclusions, but the real treat here is Irving's storytelling as interpreted by Irving himself. D.A.W.
