5.0 out of 5 stars Replacement for 1HP Hayward
Just replaced my old 1Hp Hayward as I needed a little extra oomph. The Hayward worked OK but the whole system needed to be at 100% to operate. Any minor problem would shut down the vacuum system. This one went in like a charm and my problem is solved. I can now run both the surface scimmer and jets along with the bottom cacumm and waterfall. Runs alot quieter and looks...

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad motor
The pump was delivered with a bad motor and wouldn't run. The manufacturer sent a service person who replaced the motor but damaged another pump and the pool controller. The cost for these repairs will far exceed the cost of the Pentair pump.

Received the product quickly and well packaged. Instruction for installation were clear. Pump was a liitle noisy on start up but became very quiet after running awhile. Upgraded from 1 HP to 1 1/2 Hp and works excellent. Would recommend for others.

5.0 out of 5 stars This thing really SUCKS!, June 7, 2011

This pump really SUCKS!
I've owned an in ground pool (15,500 gal.) for 16 years and purchased this pump as my third replacement pump. My original pump (another brand) had an impeller meltdown and also destroyed the motor. Second pump (also another brand) motor also burned out but pump was fine. Considered rebuilding it but the "law of diminishing returns", (and the fact that local motor re-builders don't mess with anything less than big ass industrial windings and brushes), the very reasonable price of this pump (local dealer wanted twice the $$$), and my devout pragmatism, dictated buying this pump, and to NOT, throw good money after bad. Always had a problem with motors #1&2, in that they would loose suction with several feet of water in the diving pit (9ft).
I've been using this pump for one year, and for the second time, I've had to drain my pool with this pump and this MoFo got everything out the first time, and I feel confident it would have done it on the second draining; but for my son (without thinking ) shutting the power off to empty the basket with about 2 feet of really thick crap in the pit. That's OK though...He was the one that had to get down there and bucket it out (better he than I). A fine "learning experience" for a young man, if I must say so myself. Anyway,...this bad boy maintained a full prime until that point.
If you choose this pump, I don't think you will be disappointed with it's performance, however it's durability remains to be seen. My pre-purchase research, the fact that my local dealers also sell this brand (and spoke highly of the manufacturer as a very cooperative warranty honorer), the fact that it was a well known "brand name" in the industry (as opposed to my two previous "off brands"), and the availability of a reasonably priced replacement basket (had to pay $35 for my last one), I feel I made a very good decision.
This pump really does SUCK...but in a good way!

4.0 out of 5 stars Replacement pump, May 4, 2011

This identical unit was in place when we bought our home in 2003 (2nd owners). House built in 1996. Having nothing else to go on, I will assume it is the
original pump & motor. Oh, I'm writing this in April 2011. So, I'm hoping the new will be as good as the old. Drives my 'lil buddy Hayward around the pool

and provides good jet action in the hot tub. The local L-word pool supply has them for twice the price but I can't buy one!

Local regs now require that I
install a variable speed pump.

A pox on gummint and their unfunded mandates!

By the way, the failure in the old unit is an internal short in the motor.

Trips the breaker every time it's powered up. The pump is OK, just a little worn. I could've just gotten another motor, but at this price...

As a mechanic for longer than I care to mention, I 'm impressed with anything that lasts this long and works this well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Noisy and leaky pump, January 10, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
BEWARE!! Pentair does not warranty labor on this pump, parts only. Amazon and Pool Supply Warehouse are trying to help me.

I received the pump 7 days after ordering it. That was pretty good considering I ordered it on Dec. 16, 2011 at the height of the Christmas mail blitz. It was installed on Dec. 23, 2011 ( I live in Florida) IT LEAKS( not from the plumbing).

Pentair has put me in touch with a local pool company but it turns out the factory warranty only covers parts. The Pentair affiliate wants to charge me $125.00 for labor to replace the seals that were defective from the factory. Change the review to no stars. Bummer.
The installation was tricky because the plumbing was not compatible with the Hayward I was replacing. Not a big deal though. The big deal is that the pump is NOISY, far from "whisper quiet"and a drip developed. . Upon checking to see if the noise was from improper seating on the slab I noticed a water leak from underneath the motor. I checked all the pipes and all the fittings were bone dry, so I am guessing it was shipped brand new with a bad O ring or gasket somewhere. Pentair says that each unit is tested before shipping. It did arrive with traces of moisture but now I am thinking that this was a unit that might have been returned.
I did not use the union kit supplied with the pump. My installation already had unions. the pump had inside and outside threads which was good. However the o rings supplied with the union kit were too big, good thing I did not have to use it.

I am not happy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good pump, but you could do better., December 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this Pentair pump because of good luck and longevity of the last similar Pentair pump I had. Hoping to get a similar run out of this pump but time will tell. As of now it is running quiet and strong.
Now my complaint: The connection kit included with the pump had the wrong sized O-rings! Come on now, how much effort would it have taken to include the proper size? I installed with the kit and ended up cutting it out and doing a direct hookup because of leaks. This cost me money and time! The idea of the kit is to be able to change the pump in the future without redoing the plumbing. Now I don't have that option. My 1 star rating reflects this issue, which relates to my overall frustration, not necessarily the pump itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very quiet, keeping the pool very clean., December 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Very nice pump. Had two others burn out over the previous 2 summers due to problems with the filter. This pump is amazingly quiet, and after two burnouts previously I often have to double check and make sure it is still running (almost too quiet hehe). Suction and power are very good, I have a 50yo pool system and the previous owners of the house told me I would never be able to get a waterfall or homemade spa jets working. A little bit of cleaning to the lines and the addition of this pump and both are now working like a charm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Pump, November 29, 2011

This was a replacement for a system that stolen from the house we purchased before we moved in.
Not having an idea of what was there previously, we selected this pump, mostly because of the reviews, but also because of the stainlees steel construction and the fact that it could run a total volume change of the pool in about 4 hours (10,000 gallons).
Pump came properly packaged as there was no damage or missing parts. Installation was a snap. Great instruction manual. RUNS VERY QUIET unless deadheaded or air gets into the suction line but it clears and quiets down quickly.
I would recommend getting the weather cover that goes over the motor. The motor has vents along the side and bottom that the elements can get into and these need to be covered if the units is mounted outside. This cover should be supplied with the unit, but isn't. My unit is wired for 220VAC and seems to run a little hot as I can smell the paint on the motor, but the units is new and we'll see if this continues.
Bottom line:
GREAT pump for the money
Professionally packaged
Great instruction manual
I would purchase this again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice replacement for failed pump, November 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Chose this Pentair after having had a miserable experience with a Hayward that failed after 15 months. Chose to replace rather than rebuild after local service rep said problem is rampant on the Hayward units. Easy installation for the most part, but getting O rings to stay in place was a bit challenging. Pump is running great, if a bit noisier than I would prefer. Amazon's supplier source was great and pump arrived on-time without any damage in transit.
