Every Salt System has their flaws. The Ecomatic Cells wear out in 3 years due to a silicone defect. The Jandy Salt System fails when a $200 sensor goes bad (very often). The Zodiac cells tend to crack (made of acrylic plastic). The Hayward Aqua Cells cause a power surge and burn out the AquaRite Control panel.

So believe it or not, your best bet is to install the Pentair Salt System. With proper maintenance this system works the best. Here are some tips:

The cell will not work in cold water. You will get a red salt level light in the winter months. No cell works in cold water. When the water heats up the cell will give you an accurate salt level reading. The cell is not broken or defective. It just doesn't produce in cold water, I'm talking below 65 degrees.

Inside the cell you will see a sensor that controls when the cell is alerted that it is dirty and needs to be cleaned. When the clean cell light is flashing on the unit no salt will be produced. After cleaning the cell sometimes this sensor will not clear. You will have re-clean it. By the second or third cleaning the sensor should be reset. Also the power to the unit must be off or the unit will not reset. Unplug the unit from the power center or turn off the breaker.

You will get an inaccurate salt level reading if the cell is dirty. Your cell can be dirty even when the light isn't flashing.

I service about 12 pools with this system and only one has a faulty sensor that is always flashing that the cell is dirty. I can get it to turn off for a month by cleaning the cell, but I think the cell needs to be replaced soon (4 years old).

I purchased the Intellichlor IC-40 along with many other Pentair items for my new pool.

This is the first review I have written. I installed this unit and everything appeared to be functioning ok. After a few days I still had no chlorine in my pool. I ended up shocking it while I tried to determine what was the cause of low chlorine.

I ended up calling Pentair to help me. Every phone call I made took at least 20-30 minutes to get a rep on the phone. When I did get a rep on the phone they began to instantly blame my pool levels as the problem. I ended up spending literally weeks adding chemicals to reach the unattainable "perfect" levels that Penatir requred to further troubleshoot.
I was told that my phosphates were too high for this chlorinator to work when my levels were at 100. 100 parts per billion! I was told that my cya being at 60 was the cause. As I tried to correct this everyone I talked to said that the levels did not make a difference and would not cause the chlorinator not to work.
In the middle of all this troubleshooting it was determined that I also had a faultly led on my unit. To make a long story short, I was FINALLY able to get a tech out to investigate the led issue since they couldnt blame that on my pool chemical levels. The tech replaced the unit and within 1 day my chlorine was stabilized with the new unit.

The new unit is in and it seems to work great. I believe in Pentair products but their service is TERRIBLE. Not one rep documented me calling in. Not one phone call was EVER returned despite their promises. The techs were very short with me and could care less. Im sure they are overworked but cmon, your customers are the reason you have a damn job! Wake up Pentair!!

Bottom line....

I just have to laugh at all the negatives here! I've been in the swimming pool industry for over 28 years and am VERY knowledgable of EVERY chlorine producing salt system on the market AND the ones that aren't on the market any longer. Warranty is THREE FULL YEARS FROM DATE OF PURCHASE, PERIOD. Other manufactures warranty doesn't even come close and some are pro-rated nonsense. The real problem here is that you are buying your system from a online store WITH NO SERVICE to back up the product. Do you really expect a online store to send a service person to your house for a warranty issue?? You cut out the service end of your product when you by-passed a real service company to save what? $100-$250??? If my local customers buy a IC-15, 20, 40, or 60 from my service company and they have ANY issue at all within the 3-year warranty I make 1 phone call and PRESTO! New replacement cell or transformer is ready to be installed NO CHARGE. Don't get me wrong, I buy all kinds of stuff from amazon.com all the time. The simple fact is, some items you should buy online and some should be purchased from a brick & mortor store that can back up the warranty for you.
We install 35-50 Pentair Intellichlor systems a year. Out of that we see maybe 2 or 4 units that have some type of issue within the three year warranty and most units are lasting 5 years or longer. I wouldn't install ANY other system. Keep your receipt to back up your warranty. We keep digital records for all our customers and have had a unit go bad 4 days before the 3 year warranty was up. They got a new cell, no problem, no hassle.
