Product Description

The Pentax K-3 Premium Silver Edition DSLR Camera is an advanced DSLR featuring a 23.35MP APS-C CMOS sensor and PRIME III image processor to produce high-resolution still imagery and full HD 1080i/p video with high low-light sensitivity to ISO 51200. Full-resolution continuous shooting is supported up to 8.3 fps for 22 consecutive RAW frames, with a top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec., and the SAFOX11 autofocus system utilizes 27 focus points, with 25 cross-type points, to maintain sharp focus in a quick and accurate manner. Benefitting the image quality is a selectable anti-aliasing filter, which can be turned on or off to either garner the highest resolution and sharpness possible or provide enhanced protection against moiré. Additionally, in-camera Shake Reduction image stabilization renders any K-mount lens stabilized and helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working with greater shutter speeds or longer focal lengths.

To begin with I have to say this camera can't be fully enjoyed just by looking at it from the pictures here. I want to capture what it's like to hold and to have this camera in this review, not just it's specs or performance(there are plenty of reviews about that). It has enough class and style to set it's owner apart from the crowd. The sheer craftsmanship of the K-3 and attention to detail is astounding. From the placement to the buttons, to the quality of every switch and wheel, it performs beautifully. The shutter is so quite, amazingly so. Even in a church setting it doesn't attract attention.

I've had other cameras, even vintage SLR's from the film days. But I have had so many compliments about this one just from its appearance. The silver finish roots it in a day and age of the past but embraces the modern world of DSLR's in a way that is a fine compliment to the aspirations of the makers of film cameras of old. Back then image quality had so much to do with the film you would use, not just the megapixel count of your sensor. The results were cameras that were crafted to reward the photographer and make the art of photography a joy and a skill that could be sharpened.

My only concern before buying this camera was it's size. I'm 6'6 and my hands are very large. From the base of my palm to the tip of my middle finger is 8 1/2inches. But using the battery grip for this camera helps tremendously, And even without the extra battery grip connected the main grip is so deep there really is no problem holiding the camera comfortably.

I firmly believe this camera could be used on a professional level. Maybe bot for NBA games or every sport. But events like weddings or other fine portraiture are perfectly achievable. As well as many other avenues of commercial work. This camera has all the build, the looks, and definitely the performance to get any job done.

I'm a big Pentax fan, own a complete line of the KA-mount lenses, and the K5, (3) K-01's, the K2-s (no anti-aliasing filter) and the K3 premium silver edition w/grip (& leather strap). I've owned it since December, 2013. I was excited to get this 'premium' limited edition model with 24 MP and more advanced video options, though still no autofocus in video mode. I've waited 6 months to give a review and it is the first Pentax body that has disappointed me. The K-01's are especially good for the price and their intended use (no viewfinder). The K2 and K5 are very good in low light conditions (theaters and stage lighting)--not so the K3. Though the 24 MP APS-C sensor offers more pixels to crop, the quality of images in low lighting using the SAME lens(es) is noticeably absent.

An erratically occurring problem involving shutter/mirror stuttering has been reported by many purchasers now. When depressing the shutter button, runaway mirror/shutter stuttering makes the unit sound like an early 20th century motion picture camera. Nor will the problem stop when the user turns off the power button. It continues for several seconds or more unless the user removes the battery. Ricoh, which purchased the company making these cameras, has been slow to acknowledge the problem and, to my knowledge, offered no fixes for it.

Even without the mirror/shutter stutter, the blurry photos in low light indoor conditions (especially dance shots) make this unit inferior in such venues to the K5, K2, and K-01. I'd recommend it for daylight outdoor stills and video. The color saturation is accurate under those conditions. I hope this isn't an example of the poor quality control we can expect from Ricoh in the future?

Lighter and smaller then the big two "Canon and Nikon" with more usable functions. The new AA filter is a great asset to sharper images and the colors from the sensor are true and vibrant. The auto focus is "dead on" with numerous settable configurations that make it easier to focus on subject

Excelent camera, I had Canon and Nikon, and this digital camera is complete, and very friendly with the user. It's great!
