Buy a very large supply of batteries if this will be your sole source of power.

I almost bought one of the generic brand adapters, but picked up the Pentax branded one since it looked a lot more robust and well made.

I carried some lithium AA's to put into the carrier because they have a long life.

I recently purchased a Pentax K-R after my *istD died. What I loved about the *istD was the ability to use rechargeable, CRV3 or AA batteries. Without this adaptor, you cannot use AA batteries in the K-R. For me, it is nice to know if you are in a jam, you can run to the store and buy a few AA batteries to keep you powered up and snapping away. The adaptor doesn't seem like much and seems expensive for what it does, especially considering the older cameras didn't need an adaptor. That is why I rated it four stars instead of five. If you do not have this adaptor or extra rechargeable batteries, you will not be able to take pictures. I had that happen to me the second day I had the camera. After shooting a day of pictures, the rechargeable battery died. I did not realize the power would be depleted so quickly. I wanted to take pictures and couldn't until the battery charged up again, a couple hours later. That same night I bought this adaptor and a couple extra rechargeable batteries.

So glad I bought this. When my charger quit on me in Europe, this was my backup. I had brought a couple of sets of AAs with me and was able to keep snapping pics to my heart's content. Saved me until I was able to locate the correct charger in a store days later.

Yes, it adds a bit of weight to the camera. But when the alternative is not getting any photographs of your priceless vacation, it seems a small price to pay.

While it fits well and works, the 1.2V NIMH batteries I use don't have enough juice to make it really worth owning over a battery, especially considering the cost of both items. Initially I though my lifetime supply of NIMH batteries would make it worthwhile, but the fact is that the camera is never happy when I use it. The power lever is either too low to use right off the bat or runs low very quickly.

As a backup, with non-rechargeable AA batteries, i.e. 1.5V, this might be worth owning, but I think a second or third D-LI109 battery would be a better purchase. See Opteka D-Li109 2000mAh Ultra High Capacity Li-ion Battery Pack for Pentax K-R KR Digital SLR Camera

As preparation for an upcoming trip to Africa I loaded this battery pack with NiMH batteries and set it on the intevalometer setting for 1 shot every second. It ran for about 4000 shots before the batteries died. The battery indicator shows full and low charges depending on I don't know what. Switching the camera on and off seems to do it. I'm taking this device and 7 packs of regular alkaline batteries along in case I'm unable to charge the D-LI109s.

I, also, feel more comfortable with AA cells available in most drugstores. I also carry AA NiMH rechargeables. I switch these each night, and recharge the "used" cells overnight and always carried a spare (or 2!) set. The bag kept getting heavier. I decided to weigh and compare. Pentax L-109 = 1-7/8oz; AA X 4 = 4-1/8oz!! Carry 2 sets of spares (I'm a little too careful sometimes, but better safe . . .) and you are adding a half pound of dead weight. Doesn't sound like much, but when the camera weighs just over lb. . . I found that the Li battery charges in a few hours and that it lasts well over 600 pics (some built-in flash). Considering the adapter cost $40 and a "genuine" Pentax replacement L-109 is the same price, you pays your money and takes your choice. (I'll still carry a spare set of AA's or 2 in my suitcase.) :-(

Pack this baby with four Energizer Ultras, put a 32 GB SDHC in the camera, and try to fill 'er up! I haven't had this setup long enough to tell you by how many times it outlasts the rechargeable batteries. I can only tell you that it's a lot. If you have ever turned a camera on and off, nursing a dozen last shots from a dying battery pack, you will appreciate what the Energizer Bunny (and this battery holder) can do for you. This is my best K-30 accessory, other than the 18-135mm waterproof lens. Both are a MUST-HAVE! Energizer ULTRA, rated #1 by Cons. Rep.

This item arrived (from Amazon) the next day after it shipped. And although 'PRIME' didn't charge shipping, per se, I had to pay our State's (WA.) exorbitant sales tax. I considered some MUCH cheaper alternatives, but they would ship from China and take a month of Sundays for arrival. They also looked like cheaper inferior plastic knockoffs. I was pleasantly surprise to find this item was built better w/copper electrical contacts and a solid feeling metal top that fits easily into the K30 sleeve for it. The biggest bonus is, with Accupoint's 2900 mAH batteries (I bought a slew of them), it provides about 2/3rds more power capacity than the stock lithium battery that comes with the K30. However, it also adds noticeably to the weight of the K30 body. Still, I estimate this will allow me to take around 700 shots instead of 400 with the under-powered lithium stock battery.

So, the price is discouraging, the the potential extra capacity is encouraging. The additional weight is a disincentive, but the freedom from proprietary batteries is an incentive.

I purchased this before a trip to Africa and have used it on every trip I have taken since. One advantage of the Pentax KR is the ability to take AA batteries in this battery carrier. It fits perfectly in the battery space and provides power when your rechargeables are done for the day. On the Africa trip I shot 1000 shots per day on average plus some lengthy video clips -- and even with a fresh charge the rechargeables would not see me through the day. I carried some lithium AA's to put into the carrier because they have a long life. When the rechargeables ran out, I would pop this in. Then, the next day when the rechargeables were all fresh, I would take this out and use the rechargeables.

The only thing I wish is that Pentax included it with the camera.

Other than that, it has come in handy on every single trip I have been on.
