Beyond expectation's, March 1, 2007
This review is from: Pentax 65807 8x40 PCF WP II Binocular (Electronics)
These glasses are wonderful. They have excellent range, are very bright and have a wide field of view. They are small and compact. The eye rubber guards twist to retract and expand making the binocular even more compact and durable. The main finger focus in the center of the glasses is knobbed to give you easy control while focusing on objects and you can lock it to your set focus. The right eye focus turns and clicks into place so your right eye focus is always set to your individual need. It is an absolutely wonderful set of glasses and very durable.

Pentax pcf wpII 8x42 These have great optical quality and are well built., December 17, 2009
This review is from: Pentax 65807 8x40 PCF WP II Binocular (Electronics)
I received these binoculars two days ago and have been putting them through the paces, indoors and outdoors. The temp. outside today was about 25 degrees fahrenheit, a partly cloudy winter day. I came across some Cedar waxwings and also a Downy woodpecker, the views through these Pentaxs' were great, I noticed the focus was very sharp and the Birds colors looked natural. During use I found that I could fairly easily track down the birds when looking through the binocs, and when they would fly from tree to tree I was able to keep track of them and re-focus when they landed. The view takes on a very detailed and three dimensional look through these, the depth of field is great and the Pentax PCF 8x42's lenses seemed to wrap around the birds and they just ' Pop' out at you, very impressive in my opinion. As to build quality, they are very sturdily built and comfortable to hold, these binoculars had a lot of thought put into them, from the focus lock switch, to the divets for your thumbs on the underside, to the sharp looking external coating, plus the all important fully multi-coated optics and Bak-4 prism, I am very satisfied with these Pcf 8x42's. Indoors in poor light, I could get a sense of the brightness of the binocs, and can say that these will perform well at daybreak or dusk, and I can also confirm that the minimum focus distance is what Pentax states(11.5ft). I do wear glasses and the eyecups are adjustable, smooth operating, and comfortable. If you are looking to get into birding, hunting, or nature watching, the price at which you can buy these makes them a great 'bang for the buck'. Pentax has been making camera lenses for about ninety years, they know what they are doing. Peace in 2010 and thereafter.

Decent Binos (especially for the price), September 28, 2010
This review is from: Pentax 65807 8x40 PCF WP II Binocular (Electronics)
I just received my pair of these Pentax binoculars yesterday. I purchased them off of Amazon on sale for $110 with super saver shipping. They arrived quickly and well packaged. Build quality of the binoculars themselves is excellent. Everything appears very solid. The only slight complaints I have in this department is that the diopter adjustment switch seemed quite tight at first. After working it back and forth a few times (almost seemed like I was forcing it) it loosened up quite a bit. Also the lens covers (both eyepiece and objective) fall off way too easily, almost no point even using them. I will probably store it in the soft case that it came with (which is very nice) and won't even bother with the lens covers. I may in the future either add some felt on the covers to make the fit tighter, or purchase some better ones (the felt is more likely) I have had a chance to do some basic testing under the night skies (My primary interest is astronomy). With both eye cups fully retracted I can manage to see the full field of view with my eyeglasses, but just barely. I took my eyeglasses off and re-focused, and was suprised: the binoculars almost don't come to focus at infinity without my glasses on (I have moderate near-sightedness). In fact, the focus is completely stopped, and that is my perfect focus at infinity, there is no further room to focus. This means that anyone with more severe nearsightedness than I would not be able to reach (infinity) focus. This might be a show-stopper for some. I Just hope my vision doesn't get worse or I will be forced to only observe with eyeglasses on. I first pointed them at the moon, which happened to be in the same field of view as the star cluster Pleiades -- what a spectacular view! The moon was extremely sharp with no trace of color fringing (to my eyes at least). The far side of pleiades was at least 2/3 towards the edge of the FOV and still remained sharp. I then pointed at Jupiter and was pleased to see a sharp disk (no bands, but what do you expect at 8 power) and 4 perfectly sharp moons. On Jupiter I tested the edge-of-field sharpness. I pointed the binos further and further away to see how sharp Jupiter remained. It remained a round ball until the outer 85% or 90% of the field, and at that point the sharpness quickly dropped off and it became an oval and then a line at the very edge. So the field of view is extremely well corrected (no noticeable astigmatism) out to 85-90%, then succombs to astigmatism. This is consistent with other reviews I have read. After a night's testing I'm happy with the quality of the pair I received, and will probably update this review once I get some more time behind the eyepieces.
