Review summary from DPReview

DPReview TestedAugust 2013
The Q7's image quality is good, especially if you shoot Raw, and the feature set is competitive with fixed-lens enthusiast compacts, with the added flexibility of interchangeable lenses.

Conclusion

The Pentax Q7 does well in everyday shooting, delivering image quality that's generally as good as the best enthusiast compacts. However, it under delivers for the entry-level ILC class in terms of resolution and high-ISO performance. Though we had few serious complaints about its performance, it's hard to recommend among so many excellent fixed and interchangeable-lens cameras that cost about the same.

Reasons to buy

  • High quality JPEGs with good exposure and color rendition
  • Very compact camera body and pocketable lenses
  • Raw shooting and in-camera processing
  • In-body SR sensor-shift image stabilization

Things to consider

  • JPEG detail suffers considerably at ISO 800 and up
  • Limited selection of Q-mount lenses
  • Poor video quality with electronic IS
  • No electronic viewfinder accessory

Suggested for

Enthusiast shooters interested in available light photography and casual portraits looking for a very small camera with the ability to change lenses.

Not suggested for

Enthusiasts who would give priority to low light shooting, resolution, depth of field control and lens selection over compact size.

I was looking for something small, but still flexible and fun to use with good image quality.

The Pentax Q7's smaller sensor means you simply multiply the lens mm by 4.6 and that's your focal length for adapted lenses!!!

Bought specifically for a backpacking trip through Europe with my wife. This camera was fantastic, for a number of reasons:
1. Size- it would fit into a medium-sized pocket (lens attached or detached) which helped make us look less like tourists. It was also great because it wasn't bulky or heavy- great when you are walking 8-10 miles per day. My back and neck never hurt because of the camera.
2. Color- this was a personal choice, but we bought the yellow camera and it really helped me find my wife if we got separated in a crowd. Not too many yellow cameras out there, surprisingly.
3. Function without having to be an expert- this may be good and bad, but for people like us who don't have PHD's in photography, the camera allowed just enough of the manual shot control to let us do some neat things without making a mess of all of our photos. Plus, in certain situations where you are being jostled, or need to make a shot quickly, the power turns on very quickly and the auto setting and shake control works well. We have a number of photos taken with Blur Control, the triple-shot panoramic, heightened grayscale, vibrant color enhance, etc. About the only place I wasn't impressed was in the look of photos used with flash, but that was easy to customize or turn off altogether.
4. Battery Life- we got about 1 1/2 days out of each battery under heavy use. They only took 1-2 hours to recharge (I do recommend buying 2-3 extra batteries to have a good rotation). The battery did seem to go: full, full, full, then half and then dead quickly.

Cons:
The 5-15mm lens that comes with the camera is only adequate. Specifically, it doesn't zoom very far.

For the right person this is a 5-star camera, it may however disappoint others. As a little background, I shoot with a Canon DSLR system, with a bunch of lenses which produce great images and a lot of flexibility, however, it is quite heavy and big, and I don't like to carry it around with me all of the time. I was looking for something small, but still flexible and fun to use with good image quality.

After quite a bit of research, I arrived at the Q7, and I was glad that I did. I bring it with me everywhere, it is extremely well made, the controls are very DSLR like, and it is a very flexible system. On top of that it easily fits in a jacket pocket, or a pants pocket with the 01 lens attached. At high-ISOs the images take on a film-grain look which is actually rather interesting, and much more pleasing than a lot of other cameras. With that said, noise does become an issue when you get above ISO 1000, unlike DSLRs and large-sensor mirrorless and compacts where you can go past ISO 1600 with little to no noise, not becoming and issue until ISO 3200 or higher.

So, let me sum up who I think would benefit most from this camera. People like me who already own a large sensor camera like a DSLR or mirrorless system camera who are looking for the smallest, most flexible, and fun camera out there. It's really hard to explain why, but this camera just makes you want to use it. From the control layout, to the small size, and the unique features like the customizable dial on the front, to the surprisingly useful green button on the back, and the very nice popup flash, as well as the ability to customize anything and everything, you just want to take it with you everywhere with the hope of getting a chance to use it.

I realized I needed a small travel camera while in S. America. I had taken a Pentax K-01 mirrorless camera which turned out to be too cumbersome in many situations. I researched this camera for nearly six months before making my purchase.
The Pentax Q7 is the smallest interchangeable lens camera available, period. It can be used as a handy point and shoot camera, but spend a little time with it and you will discover it has the flexibility of a fully featured DSLR. The menu structure is the same as all of the Pentax cameras ... very intuitive and easy to use. There are 8 factory lenses in the Pentax Q mount product line and, with the right third party adapter, just about every lens made can be fitted to this camera. Four of the factory lenses have built-in leaf shutters and neutral density filters. The neutral density is a must when shooting outdoors. With this camera bird watchers can have an incredible telephoto experience with a very minimal investment! A standard 50mm normal lens on this camera will become a 225mm telephoto. A 135mm lens will become a 600 or so mm telephoto.
Because this camera has a small sensor I suggest not using an f-stop smaller than f4.0 and, in post processing, crop images minimally. I also suggest shooting in the RAW mode. While this camera performs very well in auto mode, I stress the importance to learn the menus inside and out. The more you know about your camera, the better your pictures will be, regardless of the kind of camera you use.

A go-everywhere system that fits in your pockets, yet yields professional results. A little background; I was a professional photojournalist (newspapers, shooting mostly black & white), so I'm quite fussy about cameras. I had a Pentax Q, and loved it; it gives tremendous results with a little care. I skipped the Q10; it didn't seem like much of an upgrade. I wasn't sure if the Q7 would be; now my only regret is waiting so long.

The Q7 is a huge upgrade over the Q in several areas:
*It's MUCH faster. One of my few real frustrations with the Q was the pause after each shot using Raw+JPEG mode. The Q7 - with a fast card - allows you to shoot pretty much continuously.
*Low light performance is much improved
*The lenses now have a wider field of view. I've always been a wide-angle guy, and, for example, turning the sharp-but-bland normal F1.9 !01 lens into a slightly wide...very nice. The 02 is now an ultrawide -- about 24mm equivalent in 35mm terms.

All in all, highly recommended if you have a Q. If you don't...what are you waiting for?
