This is a great workhorse lens for the average shooter. It's *not* a fast zoom by any means, but it's surprisingly sharp if you hold it still, which is hard to do if you push it much past 100mm. But if you want to shoot things like the moon, or animals at the zoo, it's tough to go wrong with this lens. I would recommend a tripod if you want to use it towards the 300mm end of its range, since at that point it becomes an f/5.6 lens and unless you're on some pretty heavy sedatives, your hands will shake too much to take a sharp picture.

I would recommend this lense to any SLR owner. The quality of the photos you take are excellent. In addition, the lense offers the versatility of autofocus for beginners and manual focus for those with more experience.
