3.0 out of 5 stars In the vein of something right July 26, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
In the world of "punk" and DIY-type album releases, this album thrives, but in a world where "post-punk" is too broad of a term, this album does not hold it's own alongside the likes of well engineered releases like "The Shape of Punk To Come." Ironically, it's not the recording quality which pulls this release down, it's the vocal approach. The musicianship, while not earth-shattering, is at least acceptible and functional, but it's the vocals contributed by the TV on the Radio frontman that make this release slide under the wire and begin to work overall.

All that being said, I do not regret the purchase of this CD. I simply do not have ample ground to stand on in attempting to defend the selection of this CD to play for any of my friends. This is the kind of release that would be easy to adore if you knew these fellas from around the block, but since they opted to pull the buddy card and have their media darling friend guest on their debut, it's fair game to compare Power Douglas to TV on the Radio. However, much like the other TV on the Radio side project, Rain Machine, there simply is no comparison. In fact, in the case of Power Douglas, their is no single for college radio either.

This release will do best with fans of Saul Williams, and TV on the Radio, though it is severely less focused or driven than either of those. However, as a DIY sort of thing, is possesses integrity, identity, and a consistent texture. They just need some solid songs to emerge, because the feeling is that of waiting for something to happen that never happens. The concept barely shines through in this seemingly improvised recording session.

I hope their next release does not continue down this same path.
