This is a quality pencil. They made it from decent plastic with a nice grip. The parts are all snapped together well and it feels like it would last a long time. By cunning and careful design you can actually pull the cassette out and replace it without breaking a 'lead' each time. Reloading is very simple and includes the new eraser.

But it writes... like a pencil. Like pretty much any Pentel pencil I've had in the last thirty odd years. At the end of the day where the lead meets the paper is still the same 0.7mm graphite synthetic 'lead' that it always was. Pentel has many other designs with the long eraser that don't tie you to a very non-standard cassette.

What I can't do with this, that I can do with every other pencil I ever bought, is pour all the leads back in to their container and replace them with a different hardness, like the Bs I have in my desk drawer. I'd need to find somewhere that had the cassettes to do that. And since I have never seen any I don't actually know if I could substitute Bs.

These cassettes are convenient but the cheapest I have seen them on-line is a little over $2, that's compared to 44c for regular 0.7 leads. In my local office supplies store 0.7s are 99c and they have never heard of these little cassettes.

So while this is a nice little pencil I'll be more careful to buy a conventional pencil next time.

I purchased this pencil by accident. I thought it was a mechanical pencil like any other. I was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency of the Pentel Quick Dock 7. It has a dock (which is a plastic encasement) of pencil leads located within the pencil itself. I used the pencil for an entire semester (5 classes, including math and physics) without having to switch out the dock of leads. The eraser within the pencil, which is several times as long as erasers that come with comparable pencils, also lasted an entire semester. In addition, the eraser is the most efficient at erasing pencil marks I have ever used. I was also impressed by how smoothly the Pentel QD7 writes; in fact, its handling is very reminiscent of a pen. My only problem now is that my 11 year-old son has a serious case of pencil envy, and now I must order one for him as well.

Started out, that I enjoyed this pencil, but 2 years later, using it became struggle. The lead would break at the worst times, clicking it became a somewhat futile effort and eventually it completely stopped advancing the lead. That and the fact you can't use non-Pentel leads is why is do not intend to purchase this pencil again.

I love this pencil. I've tries other brands but they are much less sturdy; this one is built to last and works perfectly. The eraser extends from within the back when you rotate the nob; it sounds complex but it's simple and works brilliantly. This is the most useful pencil I've ever had.
