3.0 out of 5 stars Works, but not my favorite
Pros: (1) The pencil lead feed "quicker clicker" on the side of the pencil is convenient, (2) The clip is sturdy. (3) The eraser is thick and works well.

Cons: (1) it feels too thick where the pencil is gripped near the tip, (2) the clear plastic piece around the pencil tip sometimes works its way loose, (3) the small plastic cap covering the eraser is sure to get lost,...

This is without a doubt on of the best mechanical pencil I have ever used. I have used my set for two years now and they have NEVER jammed on me. Reliability is very important factor to me in a buying decision. The pencil is built like a rock, it has been dropped, stepped on many times, and surrvived hours of use from my friends with only a few scratches.

The feature of the pencil that attracted me was the "Quicker-Clicker" technology. The lead advance clicker is mounted on the side, rather than at the rear with the eraser. This feature prevents the user from accidentally advancing the lead when one erases.

Additionally, the pencil is comfortable, equipped with a non-slip rubber grip. The few downsides are the product is rather expensive($6.00 for a package of two)and the erasers don't last too long--so if you purchase this pencil, stock up on erasers. All in all, this is an exceptional writing utencil and I highly recomend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Caution: My Review Is For the Old Pencils, March 9, 2005
This review is from: Pentel(R) Quicker-Clicker™ Automatic Pencil, 0.5 mm, Smoke (Office Product)
The old quicker clickers are awesome. They used to come in a variety of colors, yellow, green, smoke, red, and most popularly: blue! I still have a smoke and green. After discontinuing the colors for a while, Pentel went ahead and changed the models and they are now weirdly shaped and don't work as well, from what I hear.

If you can get your hands on the old models, no matter how you do it, they are the best mechanical pencils! It's a shame they discontinued in order to add that silly comfort-pad or whatever at the head.

In high school, they were always stolen from me and I guess I never really kept my guard up, so I regret not having paid attention. I still use these pens to this day (a decade later). Our science teachers always used the blue ones...

Anyway, that said, five stars to the old ones, three to the new. Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands-down, the best mechanical pencil on the planet., December 2, 2011

This review is from: Pentel(R) Quicker-Clicker™ Automatic Pencil, 0.5 mm, Smoke (Office Product)
I have been using the "Quicker-Clicker" pencils since my college days, and nothing I've used before or tried since comes anywhere close to this pencil.
If there were no other selling point than having the lead-advance button down where your finger naturally lies when writing, this would still be my pencil of choice. With other pencils where the lead advance is on the end, you have to change your grip on the pencil to get more lead...with this one, you just move your finger a couple millimeters, click, and keep writing. It is not only a huge time saver, but it saves a lot of fatigue...having to keep spinning the pencil around every time you want more lead makes for hand cramps pretty quickly.

The rubber grip is wonderful; another good innovation that keeps your hand from getting tired too quickly. I've had some of these pencils for five or more years (I think the one I'm writing with right now was bought in 2007) and never had a problem with the rubber wearing out, getting sticky, falling apart, or anything. It's as comfortable and "grippy" as the day I bought it.

The 0.5 mm lead size is perfect for my work (I'm a technical writer in physics, mathematics, and engineering) and while that's not a Pentel-specific feature, I have seen companies that don't make pencils in this lead size. For detailed drawings, this is the perfect size.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favorite pencil, November 20, 2008
This review is from: Pentel(R) Quicker-Clicker™ Automatic Pencil, 0.5 mm, Smoke (Office Product)
The quicker clicker is my pencil of choice, because, as thin and light as it is, it still remains quite sturdy. With its slick look and metal tip, it also has a rather elegant yet simplistic appearance about it.

But most importantly, the pencil uses a common sized eraser and its removable tip is of the same variety as many other pencils by pentel, making it easy to repair and replace lost parts.

As mentioned before, the pencil is very light, but the grip can be uncomfortable to write with for extended periods of time.

The tip is of a brittle plastic and the threads that the tip screws onto is weak. I am a college sutudent and thoses tips keep breaking in my backpack. But I guess if you aren't rough with them they will last a while.

2.0 out of 5 stars Stupid rubber grip..., February 24, 2006
This review is from: Pentel(R) Quicker-Clicker™ Automatic Pencil, 0.5 mm, Smoke (Office Product)
I was given one of the old version, without the rubber, in fourth grade. That was 13 years ago, and I still use it. Only now is it starting to have problems, and now I can't find a replacement. I bought one'a them newfangled rubberized ones a year ago, and it's degraded completely already: the rubber has turned sticky and soft. It's like writing with half-dried play-doh. Why did they do this to a perfectly good pencil? Moreover, why did they stop making the good kind??

I've been searching the internet all night, and I can't find anyone selling the original model. If anybody knows where one might be found, do tell.

Rubber grip = crap. 'Nuff said.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ouch, be careful with this one..., July 15, 2009
This review is from: Pentel(R) Quicker-Clicker™ Automatic Pencil, 0.5 mm, Smoke (Office Product)
I used the Quicker Clicker line of mechanical pencils for years. They are built to last with high quality plastic and metal pieces.

Unfortunately, I learned about their greatest drawback the hard way. The metal sleeve the lead advances out of does not retract. I always carry pencils in my pocket and I did not know the metal sleeve had poked through my jeans. When I quickly moved my arm across it, the metal sleeve caught my skin and I ended up with a 4 inch rip across my forearm. The scar is slowly healing but my distaste for this pencil never will.

If you plan to leave this pencil in a jar next to your desk, it will serve you for years and you will be very happy with it. If you're like me and carry a writing utensil in your pocket, beware!!!
