1.0 out of 5 stars Another lackluster production from Penthouse., February 6, 2004

This review is from: Penthouse South of the Border: Caliente (DVD)
Penthouse South of the Border
Starring: One-name girls Shannon, Nikki, Alex, Irene, Carmen, Lorissa (McComas), Maritza, Christina, and Angela.
I remember that Penthouse used to set the standard when it came to pushing the limits of soft-core erotica. Features like Dear Diary, Internet Babes, Gentlemen's Club, and the two Pets in Paradise releases had nicely filmed beautiful women with decent production values when it came to setting and wardrobe. The last handful of Penthouse features look like they were filmed at some crewmember's house or in a backyard. Not to mention Penthouse has been dragging out no-name models or porn stars to fill in for their Pets.
Supposedly South of the Border was shot on location in a few areas, including Costa Rica, but you wouldn't know it since all you get are backyard scenes, a couch or two, and a lakeside. The women are hit and miss, as is the content. It started off promising enough with a girl-girl scene (the only one in this release) between Shannon and Nikki. While it was nowhere near as explicit as past scenes, including the 2004 Play-Off feature, it was at least sexy, and gave me hope after the absolutely horrible College Cuties title. The second scene with Alex is probably the best content-wise, and she really gets into the bump and grind bit towards the end. It helps that Alex actually looks pretty good and isn't surgically enhanced. Neither is Irene in the third scene, but we barely see anything on her. She's basically topless the whole time, and that's it until the very end! Very PG-13; I kid you not! Carmen is positively scary and looks like a very manly transsexual with unnaturally large and awkward breasts. The next scene was a pleasant surprise -it featured B-movie actress Lorissa McComas! While not overly explicit, she still was quite pretty and knows how to act sexy; just yanking off your clothes doesn't make one erotic.
The rest of the scenes all run together and aren't very memorable. I'd probably sue Penthouse for false advertising if they weren't so broke already. College Cuties pictured a pair of girls on the cover and had no girl-girl scenes, let alone real college girls. South of the Border is supposed to feature mainly Latin ladies but only a handful of these girls have any Latin blood in them. I'm getting sick of wasting money on low-budget, downright un-erotic crap. If I wanted this kind of selection I would have ordered something from one of those no-name companies that produces soft-core garbage by the ton. Penthouse wants to blame the Internet and magazines like Maxim and Stuff for their decline in revenue? Perhaps they'd better start stepping up the quality of their products first.

Pros: Tosses in a girl-girl scene after it's omission in College Cuties, a nice visit from Lorissa McComas, Alex's enthusiasm during her couch scene.

Cons: Carmen's Adam's Apple, Carmen's five o' clock shadow, Carmen's silicone basketballs, Carmen in general (duh), Irene leaving her shorts on, another drop in production values, another drop in model quality, the lack of Latin ladies in a Latin-themed feature, lack of imagination or set dressing, another case of `bait & switch' from Penthouse. If I had wanted something like this, I would have ordered the Spice Channel for an evening and watched it cross-eyed. I would have gotten the same viewing experience for less money.
