Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Murder, romance, ghost stories, disasters, paganism, whiskey, all are covered on Pentland Firth Howl, the tenth solo release by Chris Connelly. The album is a song cycle about his native Scotland, though this is no playful romp in the heather!
With only one other accompanist, the arrangements are as bare and spartan as the landscapes Connelly invokes with his words and melodies. Pentland Firth Howl was produced by psych / folk wizard Zak Boerger from Those Wonderful Evils, and features artwork by Scottish painter Andy McGregor.

Review

A former soldier in the techno-industrial ranks (Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Pigface), Connelly turned his back on sheer noise in the early '90s and with Whiplash Boychild and Phenobaerb Bambalam began exploring a muted beauty far more intense in its impact. --Rolling Stone

By G. Eck on September 15, 2014
Format: Audio CD
A beautiful, bare bones record full of personal introspection, childhood recollections, deconstructed philosophy, forgiveness seeking and coming to terms with life's tempestuous roller coaster of emotion. Yet where this could have been an exercise in dark, melancholy nostalgia—given the artist's well-documented past and usual musical territory—instead there's an upbeat pop optimism to these songs. Catchy guitar hooks and satisfying bridges abound. (Note that there is no backing band or drum machine here, just acoustic and electric guitars jostling playfully [lazily?] behind Connelly’s breezy vocals.) Admittedly, Mr. Connelly is an acquired taste (expect stream-of-consciousness over more accessible narrative style lyrics). But like with so much of the music he has delivered over the years, those who can resist the temptation to analyze every word and note and let the music’s transportive mood wash over them will be duly rewarded.
