Finnish photographer - b/w photo's of rural India & Russia, June 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pentti Sammallahti (Finnfoton julkaisusarja) (Paperback)
Pennti's black and white images range from such places as snow packed Siberia to rural India and Nepal. One thing is common throughout however: his insightful inclusion of animals within the frame of his (often) panoramic photographs. These are not sentimental images found in your mother's wall calendar. Rather they are a traveller's experience with the creatures that populate the lands of his wanderings. Particularly wonderful is the image, from rural Siberia, depicting a crow, foot extended, walking towards the left-hand edge of the photograph, seemingly oblivious of the black labrador racing in from the far right-hand edge of the frame. The setting is a Y junction on a deserted road, packed with ice and snow. Enjoying relative popularity in Europe, he has yet to receive such well deserved recognition here in the States. This paperback book will only become more collectible as Pennti's recognition grows. A truly enjoyable selection of his work.
