Matheny has recorded beautiful music in a variety of settings and formats, all featuring his burnished flugelhorn tone and melodic sensibilities. But Penumbra is my favorite because of its thematic strength and effective atmospherics (orchestrations, sounds, mixing). It all starts with a beautiful sound. Buy this record or Starlight Cafe for the best introduction to his artistry.

I have Dmitri's first two CDs, and am now getting the third. He's one of my favorites.
