4.0 out of 5 stars 'I want flowers instead of weeds...', July 19, 2009
This review is from: Peony's Daughters (Urban Soul) (Paperback)
Peony Shaw has four daughters, Violet, Lily, Ivy and Jasmine and they are all summoned home due to the death of their beloved Aunt Caroline. Violet is living with her mom due to her house recently burning down. Lily has an impressive career and lifestyle not to mention a husband she loves and cherishes. Ivy is a big time lawyer battling a death row case while planning a high society wedding. Jasmine, the baby, is living in the projects raising her two daughters by two different men and is a thorn in the family's side because of her lifestyle and preferences.

Peony's Daughters was a very enjoyable read. The scenes were soooo genuine that I felt as if I was watching a movie as each one unfolded. This tale strikes a cord in the realism of the situation, the people, the personalities, the reactions, it is a very genuinely engrossing tale. All of the characters are intriguing as their stories evolved within the few short chapters...I laughed, I became upset, I sympathised as well as empathized with each and every one of them. This is my first Luceila Turnage read, but I have to say it has been one of the most enjoyable ones that I've read in a while. Refreshing, no graphic sexual or violent scenes, no over the top insignificant details, the flow was awesome, each chapter was realistic and the entire read was visualistic. I felt myself actually seeing some of the people as they fought, cried, laughed, shouted, fell on caskets...this is just an altogether great read! Great job Ms. Turnage. I look forward to more of your enchanting tales! 4.25

Peony's Daughters had me hooked from page one until the end. If you like the movie Soul Food, then you will love the book Peony's Daughters. Although the sisters lives were filled with drama, their love for one another, their mom and aunt seeped through the pages. The book has something in it for everybody.
