The print quality of the book is not that great. However, the photographs are well composed, lit and in the style of old Hollywood glam.

5.0 out of 5 stars True snapshots of history, sometimes major players sometimes not, January 19, 2007
This review is from: People (Paperback)
Photographs taken by masters have an existence beyond the immediate image. They evoke deep emotions and provide a point of instant and permanent history. Eisenstaedt was one of the best and he also had access to some of the most significant people of the last three-quarters of the twentieth century. His was a time before the aggressive paparazzi, so we see the people in truly candid moments where they are at ease with the presence of the camera. The complete range of people has been captured on film. From a simple soldier on leave, artists creating and performing their work, politicians at desks and on the campaign trail and sometimes just regular people doing whatever it is they happen to be doing at the time.
Whatever the subject matter happens to be, it is captured in a unique style and Eisenstaedt has made it interesting. It is unfortunate that times have changed so that celebrities and the people that photograph them are now often in an adversarial role. Furthermore, celebrities have also learned to play to the camera and allow only the "proper" photos to be taken. There is a refreshing honesty to the photos in this collection and unfortunately, we may not see the likes of them again.
