Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4–6—This series entry introduces students to notable figures of the period. With excellent, full-page reproductions of Renaissance paintings, the book gives a sense of the importance of the arts during this time. Prominent scientists, explorers, and innovators are also highlighted, but no women are included. While a five-page introduction gives readers a bit of background, no mention is made of the debate over what time period the word "Renaissance" actually implies. The 15 chronologically arranged, single-page profiles are clear and concise, while occasionally oversimplified: Venice is labeled as part of Italy, though it was an independent government at the time, and Dante Alighieri's refers to his time "as a college student." Also, a Web site listed in the section on further resources is marred by a typo, which makes it inaccessible without turning to a search engine. Despite these problems, the short sketches are accessible introductions to notable individuals whom students will be sure to encounter in their continued education. —Alana Abbott, James Blackstone Memorial Library, Branford, CT
