A compelling tale,
This review is from: People of the Fire (The First North Americans series, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
In People of the Fire, the Gears bring us again into the ancient world of struggle, survival, and powerful Dreamers. The Dreamer, Little Dancer, is forced to choose between the woman he loves and the dangerous path of a Dreamer who walks between worlds. If he chooses his wife and children, the great drought may continue and the people will wage bloody wars for food and land. If he chooses to follow his Dreams, he may be consumed in order that his people may live. This second story in The First North Americans Series builds upon the legends created in the first novel. A compelling tale, I suffered and triumphed along with the characters.

Monster creatures on bellies crawl...,

So this is what Heron was talking about. This book is a great follow up tp "Wolf", with the meaning of the One becoming clearer in the lives of the characters. Here we see the origin of the Wolf Bundle and the Black Stone Wolf that will be become very important to the ongoing saga of there books. I will admit, I loved what happened to Blood Bear, he really had it comming.Keep moving south!

Different Time, Same Characters,
By Stacey "Torani" (Elk Grove, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: People of the Fire (The First North Americans series, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
I read the first of this series, People of the Wolf. It did not even compare to my other favorite prehistory authors (Auel, Sarabande, Sue Harrison) but I thought that I would read the second book and give the series a chance. I laughed out loud when I realized that the book is not really a sequel when it takes place hundreds to thousands of years later, but it had the same types of characters!! The old false dreamer, the young dreamer who must choose love or dreaming, the old wise dreamer that teaches the new one (whom everyone thought was a witch or was dead), the list goes on. Get creative and not keep the same type of characters!! I was looking for a true sequel, but instead got a whole new version of the same story.

Love the whole series...,

I love the People of the... series of books. Can't wait until another comes out. The formula for the books are all pretty similar, but the descriptions of different tribes, the historical evidence that is put in, and the anticipation of what is going to happen next is well worth the wait and the read.

I've loved everything I've read by the Gears and I've read just about everything they have published. Wonderful interposing of fiction onto the facts! They use their expertise as anthropologists and as story tellers to combine what really has been found about North American Indians and interpose a very believable story onto it. They really make the past come alive! The inclusion of what has really been found by anthropologists adds tremendously to the books!

Excellent presentation of life in pre-history America.,

The Gear's description of life in pre-historic America gives a vivid picture of every day life with a band of early Americans from spirituality and social customs to coping with climate and natural disasters. Their knowlege of archeology and anthropology lends a sense truth and realism that makes the story come alive.

I rated People of the Wolf four stars, but this book was basically a repeat. I read the book thinking that it was going to have a different ending but I was mistaken. It was just the same. At least Fire Dancer had at least a couple of years in real happiness, but I felt so bad for his wife who still after all that time waited for her beloved. It was still a great book. Wonderful theories on prehistory, great details and descriptions and once again strong characters. But it needed a twist to set itself apart from the first book. I loved Tanager. She didn't need some bad thing to happen to her before she became strong. She was an amazing woman who in her time of weakness showed inner strength to whom many can appreciate. But again Fire Dancer was Wolf Dreamer in another world and Tanager and Fox Dancer were also the same.

Warning -- don't read after the Anasazi Mystery series.,

I first read the Gears' Anasazi mystery series -- The Visitant, the Summoning God, Bonewalker. I'd rate those novels 5+ stars, and I've recommended them to a number of friends who have also bought the series. Because the books refer to stories that began in "The People Of..." series, I then bought People of the Silence, which I also enjoyed. On recommendation of another friend, I bought the rest of the People of... series. The first book (People of the Wolf) was well paced and included natural history, just as the Anasazi mysteries did. However, this 2nd book -- People of the Fire -- could have been tightened up and presented in half of its nearly 500 pages. Although the story line was interesting, it became repetitive with too many pages between surprises or crises. I'm throwing out this book rather than passing it on to friends. Not meaning to sound completely negative. I just think I would have enjoyed this book more had I not already read the exciting & action-packed Anasazi Mystery series.
