Da Bomb! Latin Soul Jazz Classic!, June 24, 2011
How did I miss this back when I was buying all those crusaders LPs! Think crusaders turned loose in Memphis with a full latin percussion section! In 1967 Wayne Henderson put this band together released 2 "Freedom Sounds" records for Atlantic this and "Soul Sound System" in '69. They played a few dates between Crusader tours like the Watts Summer fest. There is really nothing I can compare this band to ..think Cesta Allstars jamming with the Crusders & Sun Ra! A Front line Trombone/Sax backed by a very capable Harold land Jr on piano and the veteran Paul Humphrey on drums these are trombone driven R&B covers mixed with original pieces that touch on afro cuban/free jazz/R&B & Boogaloo. This is before jazz fusion and smooth jazz took the soul out of the idiom. The recordings are so energetic very much recorded live in studio and subsequently laying in the Atlantic Vaults for 35 years, this disk smokes! A simply beautiful record-get it for its gone again!
