Referred to generically as "social criticism," Smith's book aims for dry humor as it takes a roundhouse swing at categorized human "types" like whiners, conspiracy freaks, single-subject converts, yarn spinners, sandpaper people, chiselers and moochers, the "in" crowd, even the know-it-ALS who say "you know what I would have said," each given his/her own chapter.
Then Smith tackles "the Second team," those who are abrasive but whose stereotypes just didn't rate a full chapter.
You know these people. You deal with them everyday. In fact, you may be one of them. But whether you'll see yourself and decide to be less obnoxious as a result of reading this book is open to debate... -- San Luis Obispo New Times, July 16, 1998
Pent-up irritation can send you into one of two modes: on the rampage, also known as "going postal," or the silent seethe. Neither is good for your mental or physical well-being, so Santa Maria author Donald Smith offers an outlet. Smith decided a long time ago he didn't have to put up with these people. So he wrote this book about them, to perhaps provide relief to those of us who do have to tolerate the baggers.
"People I Could Do Without" tackles the whole spectrum of annoying people. As you read, you may hear yourself bursting out, "Yeah ... yeah!" as you recognize the insufferable types. They're all here ... and Smith describes their behavior in savage details.
"Uh-oh," the reader may think, "I sure hope I haven't done that."
This is Smith's fourth book... He's also written for the Wall Street Journal and Reader's Digest. -- Diane Urban, Santa Maria Times, July 18, 1998
Social observer Donald Smith presents hilarious commentary on those annoying types that are guaranteed to ruin a party, wreck a sporting event, destroy a business negotiation, and generally turn everyday people off their food. Readers will immediately recognize and roar with laughter at Smith's description of bizarre and irritating people, and the most effective ways of combating them. If you've ever been tangled up with a whiner, conspiracy freak, yarn spinner, chiseler, moocher, loser, organizer or other kinds of social irritations, read "People I Could Do Without." -- Midwest Book Review, Jan 1998
