Book Description

September 23, 2004
A beautifully designed, full-color photo-essay celebrating the intimate bond between some noted equestrians and the horses they own, ride, train-and love!

Leading man Richard Gere fell for a girl on horseback. For actress Alfre Woodard and her daughter Mavis, the connection with horses is spiritual. Chevy Chase says his Icelandics "get very hairy during the winter, but then so do I." And Robert Redford, recalling his month-long ride down the old Outlaw Trail that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid rode, says: "What I marvel at is how wild and free this land still can seem from the back of a horse."

In People We Know, Horses They Love, we meet nearly thirty celebrity horse lovers, from Whoopi Goldberg and Christie Brinkley to the original horse whisperer, Buck Brannaman and bestselling author Tami Hoag, who's also an amateur international champion dressage rider. Gorgeous, full-color, never-seen-before photographs capture the majesty and grace of the animals, the beauty of the ranches and stables where they reside and intimate moments shared with their owners.

Whether highlighting Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward on their ranch for special needs children, exploring Hilary Duff's passion for wild mustangs, hanging with Jeff Bridges on the set of Seabiscuit, or illuminating the interior lives of Maria Shriver, Morgan Freeman, and many others, People We Know, Horses They Love pays tribute to the special relationship between human and horse. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Program.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a lovely present!, November 12, 2004
This review is from: People We Know, Horses They Love (Hardcover)
This book is such a treat! From the wonderful mother/daughter stories featuring Alfre Woodard and Mavis Spencer and Catherine Ross and Cleo Elliott to the eye opening abuse of Premerin mares as told by Andrea Eastman and the plight of the American Wild Horse described by Neda DeMayo with each turn of the page I was captivated. The photos of Robert Redford, Dennis Quaid, Kim Novak and Hilary Duff were exceptional and what a surprise to see Giselle as such a capapble and competent rider. I truly loved this book and intend to give it to many on my holiday gift list this year!

5.0 out of 5 stars "People We Know, Horses They Love", October 18, 2004

"People We Know, Horses They Love" is a beautifully written and photographed book. The stories about celebrities and their love of horses are quite interesting and moving. Some of the best stories are of the lesser know people like Buck Brannaman--the inspiration for the movie "The Horse Whisperer" and Neda Demayo--founder of the Return To Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary for wild horses and burros. The stories and photographs of well known celebrities give us insights into their lives that we normally do not see or hear about. The book is truly inspirationaland a joy to read and re-read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not terrific, December 8, 2004

This review is from: People We Know, Horses They Love (Hardcover)
I debated rating this book "3 Stars", but decided to be nice for a change and not discourage other people from buying it as a gift for "horsey" friends. There are some disturbing flaws in the text...proof-reading errors, grammatical errors, and worse, factual errors. The celebrity "interviews" all sound as if they came from the same person. Perhaps the "same person" transcribed them. Who knows? There could be (many) more pictures of actual horses and their people, rather than artsy shots of (very impressive) trees and other fancy real estate and scenery (especially a super model in Spandex breeches and a sports bra) that just serve to make us poor non-celebrity slobs feel inadequate. True horsepeople will be a tad disappointed. Celebrity groupies will be, too. Almost everyone will be surprised that some of the personalities featured have horses. Many readers will be happy to see that not all of the rich people have super horses...many of them just plain love the ones they have. In summary, Amazon's great low prices and free shipping make up for most of these quibbles. Buy the book!
