Format: DVD
PEOPLE starts out as a juicy satire of the young, rich and idle but doesn't fully carry out its promise. An aristocratic Frenchman, Charles de Poulignac (Rupert Everett) is disgraced in his function as party-planner to the Riviera rich, and hides out on the island of Ibiza to escape his clientele's censure and the attentions of the Russian mafia. There he meets the "King of Ibiza," John John (Jose Garcia), the youngish gay man who owns the most happening disco and resort on that carefree island. When John John becomes despondent over his desertion by the hunky but vacuous muscle stud Bronco (Patrice Cols), de Poulignac rallies to help him (and stay on the island) by proposing a huge wedding for the two. All the preconditions for screwball comedy are met, and the disco scenes are -- well -- fabulous, but development feels rushed and the resolution is unsatisfying and perhaps somewhat dated. Given the colorful setting, vibrant direction and assured playing by all (look fast for Marisa Berenson in a bit part), you won't hate it but you will probably agree PEOPLE is no classic. A grudging four stars. Shop carefully for this DVD, as Region 1 versions of this 2004 comedy are rare. Download is probably the better option anyway.
