5.0 out of 5 stars Because They Pulled It All Together!, June 15, 2005
This review is from: People Music (Audio CD)
'People Music' truely goes to show that sometimes you don't have to suffer sophmore slump-in this case The Fatback band have improved by leaps and bounds. Not that their basic sound as been tampered with-it hasn't.But the grooves are tighter, there are more vocals and the songwriting has improved greatly. The first four cuts including the classic "Nija Walk" and "Fatbackin'" are the epidemy of their classic funk sounds."Baby Doll" is a smoldering, mid tempo groove that breaks up the set a little with it's huffing, sexy vocals.Only the likeminded cover of "Soul Man" and the sweet but pretty ballad "To Be With You" tempor the proceedings as "Soul March" and the deep jam of "Kiba continue to mine the Fatback's loose street funk vibe.
'People Music' is sometimes referred to as Fatback's finest overal album. It is certainly the finest of their early albums and it's hard to argue that point. The music, the writing and even the singing is first rate and even the slowest numbers (and only two get that close) are packed with alot of power and energy.Musically speaking the album is funk personafied and while alot of Fatback's contemporaries were far better known they could certainly kick up the rhythms and know their way around the one.For anyone with even the slightest interest in classic funk this is a great CD to own!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another solid, funky album., November 17, 2000

An early recording by the Fatback Band that originally appeared on the Perception Label. Why the album 'Let's Do It Again' claims itself to be a Bestof from the Perception years remains a mystery to me, since there are no tracks on it from either this or their other Perception album 'Feel My Soul'.

This is a nice little soul infected CD from the time when soul was about to become funk. The main emphasis is on the horns, there are some keys to give a fuller sound. The drumming is a bit more varied than on the later Fatback recordings, and this I enjoy a lot.

There are also some sweet soul tunes, like 'Gotta Have You (Day By Day)' and the seven minute 'Baby Doll'. The whole session is a party though and it's worth joining in. Funky highlights are 'Kiba', 'Nija Walk (Street Walk)' and 'Clap Your Hands'.

Not an essential album, but if you have the chance get it.
