Gr 5-8-This book focuses on the gymnast's career under coach Bela Karolyi more than on her personal life (though her strenuous schedule does not allow for much of a personal life) and draws heavily on her autobiography (Bantam, 1996). Durrett provides details of her subject's early childhood and includes her recent "split" from her parents. The author reveals a family devoted (in the strongest sense) to Dominique's career. As former gymnasts themselves, the girl's parents, "...made a commitment to each other that their first born child would be an athlete, a gymnast...." Family lore recounts that before Dominique could walk, her parents placed her fists around a clothesline and let her hang on until she fell (they stood by to catch her). Dark and poorly reproduced black-and-white photos show Dominique, Karolyi, and other Olympic gymnasts, yet pictures of the athlete's family are notably absent. Some pictures seem out of place, such as the one of Karolyi in the first chapter when Dominique trains under LaFleur. Those interested in gymnastics will enjoy the detailed account of competitions, routines, scoring, etc., and may glean an appreciation for what it takes to become an Olympic champion.-Laura Glaser, Euless Junior High School, TX

This review is from: People in the News - Dominique Moceanu (Hardcover)
The book basically review Dominique's life. It was like all the other books (Gymnastics Sensation and An American Champion). But if you collect book..it's a good gym book. But if your just looking for something to read don't buy it..go to your library and check it out.

This review is from: People in the News - Dominique Moceanu (Hardcover)
This was basically another biography of Dominique Moceanu, but most of the information was from the other two books about her which are American Champion and Gymnastics Sensation, since the author got most of her sources from those two books. It was pretty good, but not for a die-hard Dominique fan. Something cool about this book was that it told about Dominique's life after the '96 Olympics. The pictures were nice too, but I wish they were in color. I guess anyone who has never read anything about Dominique would find it interesting.
