Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8-12-- Hoig offers a well-documented sociological study. Each of the ten chapters treats an aspect of the current conditions and problems the Southern Cheyenne face, with many individual examples. Various celebrations, ceremonies, and attempts at cultural preservation are detailed. While there are many instances cited that point up the need for social assistance, so are there others of modern educated Cheyenne who live comfortably straddling both white and Native American societies. Because Hoig's emphasis is on current conditions, many young readers will need to fill in background information from a general work on the Cheyenne before beginning this book. Black-and-white contemporary photographs and old prints are interspersed throughout. Although many social questions are raised that undoubtedly might be applicable to other Native American peoples, this title will be of specialinterest to those students of thecurrent social problems in Oklahoma. --Yvonne Frey, Peoria Public Schools, IL
