Beautiful! I just finished reading this novel, and would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in California history, or Native American history and culture, or anyone who just wants a great story. The author, Bill Hotchkiss did an incredible job of developing characters you can't help but love. The main character, a young female leader of the Maidu people during the California gold rush, embodies a natural spiritual wisdom beyond her young age, determination and strength of a warrior, and maternal loving kindness. Hotchkiss uses the language of the native people, and beautiful descriptions of the natural world to paint a vivid story of the clash between the cultures of the "drunken miners," and the native "People of the Sacred Oaks."
I'm off to find the next Hotchkiss novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old culture vs. European settlement, July 19, 2008
This review is from: People Of The Sacred Oak (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the best books on Native American struggles in California. It is a must read for anyone interested in the "Gold Rush" period of California's history!
