Headlines in newspapers around the world told the story of Wyn Sargent's banishment from New Guinea. Scandalous lies were printed. She was accused of marrying a cannibal chief for the purpose of studying primitive sexual practices.

In truth, the American photo-journalist had incensed Indonesian officials by her outspoken views and by gathering evidence...including photographs...of their brutality toward the Dani tribesmen.

The true story of Sargent's sojourn in the Baliem Valley...how she set off with her Indonesian interpreter companion Sjam to photograph, study and write about the culture and character of the Dani.

Fantastic Book ! Wyn Sargent, woman explorer/anthropologist with compassion for the people she studied. Very well written and interesting. Ms. Sargent is a veru interesting person on her own. I first read the book when It originally came out and I was a young 20 y/o. It sparked my interest and through it I found my calling to return to school and receive degrees in Anthropology specializing in that fastening area of the world. I am currently working on my PhD, and have traveled extensively thoughout the area doing research. Thank you Ms. Sargent for helping me find my true calling in life.
