There has been a bunch of news emanating from Houston in recent weeks. You got Destiny's Child getting ready to dismantle, then the city was one of many major destinations for the Hurricane Katrina evacuees, and most recently was the four-game sweep by the Chicago White Sox over the Houston Astros in the World Series. With all this disappointing stuff happening to the city, Houston needed a little boost to lift its spirits...at least for a little while. Enter local deejay and rapper Paul Wall to fill their hearts with joy and their ears with delight from yet another impressive album from the Dirty Dirty. Paul Wall has been on the underground rap scene for some time now, releasing albums with his partner-in-crime Chamillionaire and popping up on other rappers' albums as well. After the success of "Still Tippin" with Mike Jones, it was the perfect opportunity for Paul Wall to drop The People's Champ and benefit from the sudden popularity of Dirty South rappers.

The breakout single "Sittin' Sideways" is one of the many good tracks from the major record release from Swishahouse/Asylum/Atlantic. Bun B makes two guest appearances with Paul Wall's second single "They Don't Know" and the song "Trill," which is the same title as Bun B's first solo album (see review below). Paul Wall includes his collaboration with Kanye West called "Drive Slow" that was originally featured on Kanye's Late Registration album. Trey Songz makes his 700th cameo with the song "Ridin' Dirty" and Freeway integrates some East Coast flavor on "State To State." "Big Ballin" and "I'm A Playa" featuring Three Six Mafia is done with elements of that 'screwed' sound that accompanies a lot of albums coming from the sound that derived from the late Dj Screw. "So Many Diamonds" featuring T.I. discusses the ever-growing trend of diamond-encrusted fronts that a lot of rappers have continued to rock in their grills.

But The People's Champ isn't entirely plastered with cameos, as Paul Wall does his thing on the solo tip as well. The highly-arrogant "Smooth Operator" gives you a sense of Paul Wall's ego while "Internet Goin' Nutz" depicts him as some charismatic geek surfing online chat rooms for some computer love. "Girl" samples the Chi-Lites' "Oh Girl" for a melody that the ladies can enjoy. "Just Paul Wall" is another mellow cut that seems to showcase the sentimental side for the ladies so that they know there is more to the rapper than what you see on TV. "Sippin The Barre" possesses that signature southern sound that we all have gotten conditioned to even though the background beat reminds me of Ray J's horrible "Centerview" song from his latest album Raydiation.

It doesn't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing, and Paul Wall has been received very well by the music industry and the listening public as well. The People's Champ debuted number one on the Billboard 200 charts, and nothing is stopping Paul Wall from continuing his trek to the top. And even though he's a white rapper, it practically has no bearing on his ability to appeal to the masses or the Hip-Hop community. The People's Champ is something that Paul Wall as well as the city of Houston can be proud of.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is The People's Champ, October 13, 2005
This review is from: The People's Champ (Audio CD)
Paul Wall was hot on Still Tippin, then Sittin Sidewayz came out, that was nothin but hot flames. Paul Wall said he was the People's Champ and he proved it. All the beats were crazy, but Sippin Tha Barre and They Don't Know was the hardest ones. I definitely like March N Step (U gotta march like a soldier, walk how you talk it), the flow is excellent. Everybody get this album.

2.0 out of 5 stars Honest Opinion, October 2, 2005
This review is from: Peoples Champ (Audio CD)
i'm not really feeling the album. I liked the single "Sittin Sideways" and also "Drive Slow". But the album as a whole...?? it's not that hot. the beats are lacking... paul wall sounds like he has down syndrome... if it wasn't for the guest appearances, the album would REALLY be a flop. "the people's champ", definately not the highpoint of my cd collection. ;\

1.0 out of 5 stars Makes Mike Jones look like Big Pun (yea, he's that bad), September 27, 2005
This review is from: Peoples Champ (Audio CD)
Wow can it get any worse. First we get a million jokes of lyricists coming out of the south, then we get a guy who says his name and phone number in every bar he drops. Now we got a white guy whith a grill rappin about his rims and his carrots............oh yea, and his candy paint LOL. This is by far the worst gimmic I have ever seen. Just this in general makes my blood curl, an annoying white guy name Paul Stanly trying to be cool and call his last name wall, rapping about the most ridiculous things I have ever herd. "my chain got more carrots then bugs bunnies lunch"..............this way incredibly corny wack punch line alone make me wanna jump off a bridge. Dont buy this album, ill just leave it at that.

Now id love to talk more but I gotta go get my rediculous grill put in at the dentist, and drive over there in ma eighty fo' with dem rims spinnin and my chain lighin up like a lamp, then im gonna go get some more of that candy paint. Do I sound corny to you? Well I just summed up the whole pall wall album for you with that alone.

1.0 out of 5 stars what is this trash???, September 25, 2005
By
This review is from: Peoples Champ (Audio CD)
ok i already knew this was gonna be garbage becuz mike jones and slim thug both released .154 out of 10 star albums. but this dude takes the cake of who's the worst of the 3. he must've mentioned his "candy paint" over 300 times (and that's just in the 1st 8 songs alone). for the rest of the album he's mostly talkin' about how big his rims are (to compensate for something maybe) or how much he spent on his stupid lookin' grills. only a rich person should buy this album. because if you're not rich you'll be beatin' yourself up for the rest of your life for wastin' the $13.99 to buy this album when you could've spent it on something more useful and sensible like 280 sticks of wrigley's double mint gum (thats 56 packs of 5). don't waste your time and money. paul wall should be court ordered to repay everyone who paid money for this trash...

This review is from: Peoples Champ (Audio CD)
i got a chance to hear His Album recently&didn't get the Hype he was getting.but then again i was Puzzled over the Buzz that surrounded Mike Jones as well.the Production was decent, but I wasn't feeling this Cat's flow at all.He seems more lucky because of the Rights beats&timing than His Actual Talent.
