Book Description

December 1998
For centuries the mysterious region of Southeast Asia known as the Golden Triangle has exerted a powerful hold over the Western imagination. Today it continues to figure in world news because of the infamous traffic in opium and heroin. Yet this fascinating area is also of considerable interest for a different reason: within it live six culturally distinct peoples - the Karen, Hmong, Mien, Lahu, Akha and Lisu - struggling to maintain the integrity of their beliefs and way of life against all the pressures of the rapidly changing society around them. Paul and Elaine Lewis have lived with the tribes of northern Thailand since 1968. The results of their experience and research have been gathered in this book, along with more than 700 mainly colour photographs. Here we see not merely the landscape in which these people live, but their ceremonies their clothing, their houses and villages and their impressive skills at jewelry, textiles and basketmaking.

From the Inside Flap

For centuries the mysterious region of Southeast Asia known as the Golden Triangle has exerted a powerful hold over the Western imagination. Today it continues to figure prominently in world news as a focal point for tales of the infamous traffic in opium and heroin. Yet this fascinating area is also of considerable interest for a different reason: within it live six culturally distinct people--the Karen, Hmong, Mien, Lahu, Akha and Lisu--struggling in a hostile environment to maintain the integrity of their beliefs, customs, and way of life against all the pressures of the rapidly changing society around them. Paul and Elaine Lewis lived and worked with the tribes of Northern Thailand for many years. The results of their experience and research have been gathered in this book, along with more than 700 photographs--almost all of them in color. Here we see not merely the demanding landscape in which these peoples live, but their ceremonies and rituals, their clothing and ornamentation, their houses and villages and the impressive skills which they exhibit in such crafts as jewelry, textiles, and basketmaking.

This excellent book is a must for anyone interested in the remaining hilltribes of S.E. Asia. Very well researched and photographed. The information on the hilltribe jewelry is the most comprehensive I have ever seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive visual sociocultural history of Hill Tribes, February 3, 2005
By
Sakuteiki "sakuteiki" (Grants Pass, OR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peoples of the Golden Triangle (Paperback)
Life transition ceremonies (birth, death, adolescence, marriage), clothing, agricultural implements, personal and abode ornamentation, spiritual rituals detailed. Descriptions of social customs and beliefs assist understanding of dilemmas outlined in Healing by Heart: Clinical and Ethical Case Stories of Hmong Families and Western Providers by Kathleen A Culhane-Pera Healing by Heart: Clinical and Ethical Case Stories of Hmong Families and Western Providers. Recommended for photos with narrative specifics enabling one to visualize each tribal unity. Ironically missionaries like the Lewis' impugn the rights of tribes to self-determine animist belief and ritual, and undermine parental authority by teachings separate from historical cultural tribal wisdom, ultimately contaminating and diluting cultures so richly described in this volume.

This review is from: Peoples of the Golden Triangle (Paperback)
This is a superb book. The photographs are many, covering all aspects of these people's lives. The narrative is arranged magnificently: language, customs, etc., etc.

This book should be in everyone's home, who is interested in the peoples of the Golden Triangle.

By the way, Paul Lewis is my cousin.
