1.0 out of 5 stars History...not December 17, 2012
By A1Susan
The people who wrote this do not represent Occupy Oakland and made slanderous accusations against other Occupy Oakland activists that are repeated in the book. OO deserves a good history to be written, unfortunately this isn't it. All of these articles are available for free online.

1.0 out of 5 stars NO NO NO NO!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS!!!! December 17, 2012
The people behind this book DO NOT in any way represent Occupy Oakland. In fact, during a General Assembly this group of individuals were officially denounced by Occupy Oakland and their committee was disbanded for trying to paint a member of the community as a terrorist/snitch. They then took it upon themselves to do anything and everything possible to divide, damage, and slander the Occupy Oakland movement. Nobody from Occupy Oakland wants anything to do with this group and will absolutely refuse to work with them. DO NOT support them financially!

DO NOT purchase this book, even if you would like to burn it. Nobody from the Occupy Oakland community is privy as to where these funds are going. The funds are certainly not being spent on organizing or jail support or anything to benefit the community.

Please DO NOT support people trying to co-opt and capitalize on our movement.

Thank you.

1.0 out of 5 stars What Nerve!!! People Who Bailed on OO Produce a Book! December 17, 2012
Wow....I hope people will read this review BEFORE buying this sham of a book! You should know who is producing a history of Occupy Oakland BEFORE buying a copy. These people who "edited" this book cut and run way early in the occupation of the plaza (if they even camped out there...like Tim Fong in particular). Did these people participate in committees ??? Seems to me I recall so many arguments coming out of the People of Color Committee that it resulted in the formation of an Occupy the Hood in Oakland and there went a small contingent of people. I resent anyone making a dime off of Occupy Oakland for the mere fact that OO had an unwritten, but well-known DISTASTE for anything sold w/ Occupy on it. Anyone who is seeking to make a dime off of Occupy Oakland or any occupy shouldn't be trusted. The MOVEMENT will not be sold or sold-out!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not in my name. December 17, 2012
By Bri.
I couldn't pick 3 of these authors out of a lineup because they have not been present in the movement for several months and most served on the OO Media committee that was disbanded last Spring 2012, (for the same reason people are denouncing this book, they spoke FOR Occupy Oakland without speaking TO Occupy Oakland) or the Finance Committee which effectively dissolved in the same time period. Shake Anderson, the first listed author has served a divisive role, seeking conflict where there is none, as well as access to various committees' autonomous funds and Occupy Oakland's general fund. Despite his wishes to act as an authority with regards to Occupy Oakland's transparency (and apparently its narrative now as well) he has never offered to do "behind the scenes" work that was not self-aggrandizing. He's been disrespectful to women, dedicating an entire "Sophisticated Hyphy" radio program to pressuring two female organizers within the movement into sexual relationships that were explicitly rejected over and over again.
Moreover, it is ironic that a "People's History" should have any part written by a man who never lifted a finger in the grunt work of the movement, such sweeping the plaza, standing on the food serving line, or sitting in front of Santa Rita in the rain and subjecting himself to search on a regular basis to visit our political prisoners or see a glimpse of them in court.
Finally, and this is the greatest point. Occupy Oakland is the arm of the movement that has seen some of the most severe repression, and at 788 arrests, percentage-wise, has one of the highest mass arrest rates for any part of the movement in the country.

it is nice to hear different perspectives on the movement that have not been shut down by either the state nor by those that disagree and threaten differing opinions...

5.0 out of 5 stars "Who the cap fit, let them wear it" December 30, 2012
or, to quote Bob Marley again, "Guiltiness rests on their conscious."

The negative reviews on this book, most posted on the day it was published, should send up a big red flag to Amazon customers looking to get a history of Occupy Oakland. These reviews are written by the people whom the book criticizes. I was an enthusiastic participant at some points, and was crushed to see how this insular, secretive group of white youth from god-knows-where ran Occupy into the ground, ignoring the people of color in their midst - and the needs of Oakland most of all. It was chillingly effective movement dismantling.

If you want to get a real perspective on what happened to Occupy Oakland, I suggest you start with this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Some opportunistic trash December 17, 2012
By D00D
These people are shameless, trying to turn a movement into money for themselves. Don't support them, and definitely don't give your money for their liberal reformist drivel.

Zappa has a very fair and nuanced way of critiquing the occupy mayhem.

His analysis of the racism and sexism that were prominent in Occupy Oakland is spot on, both in the book and on his website "Oakland Radicals."

Occupy Oakland is viewed as a white, privileged movement by POC within the Bay Area yet, the occupy intercore has done such amazing bulls**t PR for themselves that POC in other places actually think that occupy oakland was a majority POC movement. This book helps to clear that up and combat occupy propaganda by white academics and researchers claiming occupy was historically connected to the panthers and other bay poc centered radical groups. Lets get it straight, Occupy Oakland has a great deal of academic, white and class privilege all wrapped up in a pretty package of people proclaiming to be adverse to all those things.

Zappa is much more gentle with the Occupy intercore than I would be. Calamity, Mike King, Omar, etc are well known in Oakland for being power hungry. Many even suspect that there are mental health issues at the core of Calamity, King and Omar's actions since they tend to be incredibly disruptive in the groups they are part of to the extend that they appear to have deep anti-social tendencies. Much of the time this erratic and unnecessary behavior has been directed at POC who have voiced concerns about the connection between racism, shadow leadership, and power within occupy. Zappa's writing does a great job laying this all out.

I hope that the numerous Black and Brown people who have been attacked by Occupy can continue to speak out and publish.

I read that proceeds of Peoples History of OO are going to save the Marcus Garvey Building in Oakland! Buy a copy!

Please keep it coming, peoples history!
