5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful source of quality information on home remedies!
This book is a must for any serious medical library. The section on herbs is as close as I've seen to a PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) for herbs--active ingredients, dose, adverse effects, etc. The authors have done a great job pulling together what information on herbs is out there into a very useful format. The section on home remedies is also very nice. Who...

Who would have ever guessed a coconut macaroon could be medically useful? ... or meat tenderizer. (Not to mention having few side effects.) Some of the stories of how these home remedies were discovered also make for good reading. Overall, a wonderfully useful compendium of natural remedies that values both empirical as well as anectdotal knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for every home, November 30, 1999
By
This review is from: The People's Pharmacy Guide to Home and Herbal Remedies (Hardcover)
This book should be read by anyone interested in being an informed health-care consumer. It will not replace the advice of your physician, but will give you a great deal of information your physician may not have. In this way you and your doctor can be colleagues in addressing your health maintenance.

The book is well-written, well-researched, and very easy to use. In these days of high prescription costs, it pays to try home and herbal remedies. After all, if they don't work for you, the drugs will always be waiting on the pharmacy shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every home library should have a copy!, June 23, 2000

After checking out the Graedon's book, we stocked up on a few items as we headed out of town for a weekend camping trip. One of their recommendations is Alka-Seltzer for bee stings. (We had never heard of this!) When one of our daughters was unfortunate enough to cross paths with a bee while identifying wild flowers, we popped a wet Alka-Seltzer on the site of the sting. She was skeptical, but the pain and swelling was completely gone in a few minutes. We won't go anywhere without Alka-Seltzer this summer and a few of the other home remedies they recommend. Excellent! Everybody needs a copy in their home library.

5.0 out of 5 stars The People's Pharmacy by Joe Graedon, July 21, 2003
This is an excellent reference work. The author defines a
typical drug and explains the FDA process of oversight. For
a variety of drugs, he explains the benefits, as well as
the downside. There are extensive sections on adverse drug
reactions. Toward the end of the book, the author explains
how to save money on drugs and safe self-treatment programs.
Overall, the book is a valuable addition to any personal
health care library.

A nutritionist recommended this book to me because I have arthritis. I found some of the suggestions about arthritis and other conditions useful. The book is easy to read and sounds like my grandmother.

This book is an excellent reference guide for what ails you. I have recently used the cold remedies and found them more effective than over the counter remedies. The best part is that the suggestions are easily obtained.
