The purpose of this slim work is to provide a ready reference to the "peoples" of Latin America. The authors divide the book into two parts, a brief section on old cultures (Mayas, Aztecs, Incas) and the remainder on today's cultures, including such well-known groups as Mexicans, as well as other peoples who live beyond any one political boundary, such as the Aymara Indian tribe of Bolivia and Peru. The book is clearly written, but tends to be superficial, and the economic and political descriptions are incomplete. No other work exists along these lines, but more comprehensive accounts for most groups can be found in general encyclopedias, and economic and political settings are better described in such works as the annual Latin American and Caribbean Contemporary Record (Holmes & Meier).
