Even on the journey over there is adventure enough: their ship is torpedoed, and Pep bravely rescues a little girl from drowning. And when his beloved master is left alone and dying in the Argonne Forest, determined Pep finds him and alerts Red Cross stretcher bearers to his master's whereabouts. A very touching dog story.

The Pep story book is physically thin and not thick on reality. It may have been derived from a true story but not clearly stated. Somehow this dog breaks out and hones in on his master in all of New York and a european battlefield.
The foreward is way too long and states a lot of the obvious to dog owners. But for the difficult words I would have given it to a young reader.
