4.0 out of 5 stars Pepe El Toro goes out with a bang!, September 8, 2008

This review is from: Pepe El Toro (DVD)
Pepe El Toro(1953) is the shortest and breeziest installment in Ismael Rodriguez's Pepe El Toro trilogy(Nosotros Los Pobres, Ustedes Los Ricos, Pepe El Toro). To pay off a giant debt, Pepe(Pedro Infante) becomes a professional boxer with help from an old friend, Lalo Gallardo(Joaquin Cordero). The film also continues to explore Chachita and Ata's relationship. This film has a slight Rocky-vibe...even though it predates the 1976 Stallone film by over two decades. The final film in the series is also named after the main character.
Director Ismael Rodriguez had the grace and goodwill to make references to the lovely Blanca Estela Pavon, who was killed in a plane crash in 1949. Pavon played Celia in the first two films. There's a sombre flashback to the first film with Pepe, Celia, and Chachita singing "Amorcito Corazon". The editors add a slight echo to the song to give it a haunting, nostalgic appeal. Watching the Pepe El Toro trilogy felt like watching the Back to the Future movies: the films in the series were a special experience to its fans.

Pepe El Toro(1953) IS Mexican cinema!
