Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. K-1. New readers will get lots of phonic practice in this very simple version of an old folktale. A Latino boy, Pepe, and his father pick a basket of chiles, load the basket on their burro, and then get advice from a series of travelers about how to carry the chiles to market. "No, no! Poor Pepe!" says one advisor, so Pepe gets on the burro. But then it's "No, no! Poor Papa!" who gets on behind Pepe, and so on, until Papa, Pepe, chiles, and burro end up in a tangled mess: "Basket on burro. Burro on Papa!" The pictures are large and bright, but they don't always show the action clearly. Still, adults and kids will talk about what's going on as they sound out the words together and enjoy the silly slapstick. Hazel Rochman

My 6 year old is starting to read on his own and we tried PEPE AND PAPA but the story line of the book was very confusing. The pictures and the words seemed to leave out information making it difficult to follow what was happening. The boy and his father make a trip to the market to sell their chili's and they meet other people along the way but the pictures and the words do not explain what is happening along the journey.
