A Sublime Collection of Spanish Guitar Favourites,
This review is from: Pepe Romero: Recuerdos de la Alhambra / Jeux Interdits / Asturias (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful collection of Spanish guitar standards, nicely programmed and performed - Romero's playing is nothing short of virtuosic. Comparing Pepe Romero's version of "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" on this album to John Williams Greatest Hits (1974) version, it is clear that Romero is a true virtuoso of the guitar. That is not a put down on Williams, who is one of the most gifted players around. Rather it is a testament to the talent of Romero. In Williams' rendition of the aforementioned Tarrega standard, you can hear him putting his all into the performance - at times he borders on over-playing. Romero, on the other hand, seems totally at ease with the piece. You get the sense that for Romero, the guitar is a tool he has total mastery of. He has nothing to prove to anyone - his only purpose for playing seems to be to share his love of music.

I have met the Romero's Family in the later 1970's and have heard them play clasical music off stage and it sounds the same as the recording. Their music brings tears to my eyes. They play from the heart, and are not caught up in a competition spirit. They love music and play from the heart. that many guitarists have

The first time that I heard Los Romeros and in particular Pepe Romero many years ago, was the "Concierto de Aranjuez" and the "Fantasía para un Gentilhombre" of Joaquin Rodrigo, with Neville Mariner and the "Saint Martin in the fields" Orchestra, after listening those magisterial pieces for guitar, I said to my self "What a guitarist", pure notes and a brilliant interpretation (in my opinion better than Narciso Yepes, and even than John Williams ) and now in this recording and some others more of Pepe that I listened, I confirm my appreciation of this brilliant Spanish artist. This recording presents the most representative Spanish composers of the nineteenth century with the exception of Celedonio Romero (1913-1996) father of Pepe. As a classical guitarist I can say that the interpretation of "Asturias" and the "Introduction and variation on a theme by Mozart" for example is really magisterial, in the same way the pieces of Fernando Sor. Regarding to Francisco Tarrega and his "Capricho Arabe" I must say that the first bars of the piece are different in the articulation of the notes as they were written (with legato) and in the repetition of the same phrase, Pepe did it an octave down, which is the first time I hear, and is unusual that the last two notes of the same phrase, to be played in the same string (E) but in two different strings (E and B), which gives that phrase more Moorish soul, in any case is what the master felt it so, and is totally respectable. His interpretation of "Recuerdos del Alhambra" is so beautiful and his tremolo evokes the interpretation of two instruments playing a the same time, one of them, an old mandolin with accompaniment of guitar giving us the sonority of a mature sensation. If you are a lover of the Spanish classical guitar, clear sound, excelent interpretation in hands of a master, do not hesitate in buying this recording.

My Uncle has a very luxurious car and stereo system to match. I visit him a couple of times a year and he always has the most wonderful music. A year ago I fell in love with this Pepe Romero CD and kept asking him to send me the name of it.He kept forgetting. So I took out his whole set of discs for his car and found the name..... I've never looked back - it's wonderful, soothing music that you don't forget easily and played by the best of spanish guitar.

I've gone to see the Romero family many times over the years. Was disappointed to not see Pepe Romero when he came to our area a year ago, so I purchased this album to hear his music. It is a wonderful collection of some pieces I am familiar with and some that I am not. A great album and you will love it if you follow the Romeros.

Frankly, I was disappointed by this 2 disc audio CD product. Except for a very few lively popular pieces of music, the rest of the tracks on this CD seemed to be dreary and melancholic music. There are a few outstanding
guitarist performers but their guitar music was drowned out by the orchestral accompaniment. Much of the music on the discs is however, and is fortunately, solo guitar. |
